avoid people trying to sell you things

they don't tell the truth

for example ............ to sell you carpets they will say come with me and 'I will take you to a carpet exhibition for free '

you ask ' How far away is it ?'

they answer ' close by' or ' just around the corner' and it's a few hundred yards away

a guy on the beach you've never seen before will welcome you like a long lost friend

And the airline check in desk rub their hands with glee when they see you heading towards them with your bargain carpet/rug , that's going to cost you £40 to get home .

Going to the markets(medinas) is an experience but it is people hassling you to buy all the time, soon get fed up of it.Never felt threatened and apparently very little crime.Weather would be the main thing.

Tunisia is without doubt the worst place I`ve ever been to in my entire life. It`s an absolute pig sty. If I was offered a grand a week to live there I`d tell them to shove it. The very memory of that cesspit makes me shudder.

I usually went march/early april and the weathers a bit hit and miss then if thats what you're after. Didnt choose to go cos it was work, but found it a bit more tolerable than some of your other correspondents.

Make sure that you have adventure sports insurance if you plan to take a taxi.

We had a great time by the way. Much better than Morocco.

Carthage ( nr Tunis) is ok. Rest is sh1te. They prefer the French guests and treat the Brits badly in restaurants etc. Go to Egypt for a tad more money and a world of difference service and food wise.

Spot on. I returned with a notifiable disease (Campylobacter). I had to get an injection from the quack`s on my return to stop me continually sh1tting myself. (23 dumps in one day is excessive by anyone`s standards) Then an area health inspector turns up & advises me he is confining me to my own house for 2 weeks!

The place is pure hell on earth.

if you:

1. like haggling in souks for tat you don't want
2. have an interest in islamic architecture
3. are a star wars fan, particularly tatooine
4. have an interest in roman amphitheatres

you may want to briefly leave your hotel. have a long hard look at youself and your driver if you plan on taking a louage. as others have made very clear, there are better holiday destinations.

Never been to Tunisia but i was in Cairo last year.

From what i have heard its pretty similar to Tunisia in terms of attitudes and customs.
I hated it there, the most dishonest people i have ever met, you get hassled everywhere. Its even much worse than India.

Not all of the middle east is like that though.Jordan, Lebanon and Iran are all extremely friendly.
In fact the nicest people i ever met were Syrians (this was in 2009 pre civil war).

Surprisingly, Syria used to be very very safe place a mere 5 or 6 years ago.

went to hammammett 3 years ago. stayed in nice hotel, nice food and drink right on beach. was lovely if you stayed in resort but if you went out the place was filthy and constantly being hassled was a pain. wouldnt want to go back in a hurry.
