30 years isn't that long that you can just say that is the way it should be now.. from 1800 to 1900 we had overall deflation.

Prices will be nervous until the election. If conservatives win they may rise a few per cent because of the relief and desire for change. If Labour win sell at any price and get out of the council tax net,a drop of 15% by end of year.

Report G1_Jockey_4 • January 27, 2010 10:41 PM GMT
just cant see a fall.

lenders are being more welcoming.
rates are low
wont go up more than 1% this year if that.

imo there will be a 1-5% rise.
down on last year but it will go up

Report TJM • January 28, 2010 1:31 AM GMT
It is when they go down not if.

There are two dozen reasons they fall, and only hope that they rise.

Interest rates have to rise, unemployment is a huge concern also. Sterling is fighting a good fight but ultimately it is fecked. depending upon how it is handled and in particular the withdrawel from QE, then an implosion is not beyond the realms of possibility. Even a small hiccup in this situation could see the start of another leg down. And let us not forget that just about every long term indicator for houseprice affordability is oversold. Many Fixes are set to come to an end this year amidst a backdrop of inflation and pressure on base rates.

On the other hand, there is apparently a shortage, though it has been that way since adam was a lad!

Report G1_Jockey_4 • January 28, 2010 5:15 PM GMT
taxes for middle earners will rise.NAP
Report punterfleecer • January 28, 2010 6:28 PM GMT
Meatloaf,

they will go down when the Tories get in because, they will raise the interest rates to 15% like back in the 80s so the rich can get a good return on their savings

and with 15% interest rates, a lot of homeowners will completely struggle to pay their mortgages therefore selling them, usually to the rich people so they can be landlords

it's only the Labour government that would keep interest rates at 0.5% cos they do actually care about the poor in some ways
Report Birchola • January 28, 2010 6:48 PM GMT
We wont see 15% interest rates again but they will rise post-election probably to about 5% Labour are keeping the rates at a false low in an attempt to stay in office.

Inflation is already starting to rise sharply and will continue so after May the interest rates will have to go up.

There are a massive amount of people (myself included) who are at the mercy of variable interest rates because they dont have the equity in their homes to lock down a fixed rate. The interest rate increase will push many over the edge leading to mass repo's and a fall of around 20% in prices imo.
Report d13phe • January 28, 2010 6:52 PM GMT
central gov'ts wont rise interest rates until they have to and even then they will be reluctant

it might not be this year that we feel the pain but it will come

I will say this year up 5% purely because we are currently witnessing a false economy

the big correction when it does come will be more painful the one we have just experienced imo
Report punterfleecer • January 28, 2010 7:05 PM GMT
wish it would go to 5% max, mine's at 6% until 2011!

regret it!!

financial advisor told me when i got my mortgage renewal in 2006, that the recession would be inevitable and get a fixed rate mortgage at 6%, because when the recession comes in, interest rates will go sky high like the 80s

seems not eh?

at least New Labour can ride a recession far better than the Tories
Report Meat Loaf • January 29, 2010 2:21 PM GMT
Appear to still be going up according to the info released today
Report paul the b • January 29, 2010 2:38 PM GMT
Up...for a simple reason, supply and demand.
House owners are enjoying such great deals with tracker mortgages, which will not encourage them to sell as the they will not have such a low mortgage deal again.

as more houses in poorer areas are tenanted and bought up by landlords it result in ,

good areas prospering

poor areas struggling

this trend will continue for years ahead ,making properties in decent areas hard to come by

imo

Shortage of houses makes me smile.Fair enough there may be a shortage in the S.E.but in the North there's certainly no shortage. The shortage in the North is jobs which successive governments(Labour as well as Conservative) have failed to tackle.Alright you cann't make private enterprise move to somewhere they don't want to go but do all these government departments have to be in the S.E.?In this area (Sedgefield constituancy, needn't tell you who was M.P. here for years)you can pick a decent house up for 50k.In fact the house I live in is 3 bedroomed, double glazed, rewired, gas central & has an unbroken 20/30 ml view.If I was to sell it I'd struggle to get 50k.The answer for any government is get what employment you can moved into these areas of high unemployment & it may alleviate the housing shortage a little bit. It's no good them puffing & blowing about moving Government departments, they should get on & do it.If their employees don't like it,tough move like others have had to do.
Report rob_dylan • January 29, 2015 8:55 PM GMT
Agree makes sense to try and move certain departments up north.  Trains were always based in crewe and derby.  BBC now in Salford(is it?)., dvla in cardiff.  Does NHS have a HQ?  Department for Education?  Police.  HM Revenue.  Etc all these depts must have some HQ why not try and base them in areas of high unemployment rather than London.  Where is that?
