I'm already at the top of the tower drinking stella and scoffing a vindaloo, you're not allowed to tell me I've wasted my time.

Talk of vacuums is simply throwing in anorher variable.
By:
Perhaps I should habve said 'another condition'.

Jump, Spark.
By:
... and take Naydam the Dense with you!
By:
suck, then jump, imo
By:
Why dense, Orioles?
By:
One shouldn't forget the magnus effect of course, or in my case the magners effect.
By:
I wasd merely pointing out that talk of vacuum changes the parameters of the original question.
By:
That's what it says on my list, naydam.
Do you wish to rebut? |
By:
What list?
By:
so taking what everyone has said into account, to answer the EXACT original question.
no they wouldnt land at the same time thats the fact of it. if you wanna do the vacuum and keep everything the same then yes but that was never the question. orioles changed it to suit what he knew :) |
By:
his shopping list
By:
Orioles. From my posts you should be able to deuct that I agree with you. I wan thrown out of school aged 15, so I am entitlrd to be dense. Bear in mind though, that we agree.
By:
Try it, BJ King.
By:
i agree blackjackking
i remember trying to explain it to our physics teacher when i was in 4B and he wouldn't have it ... put me off science for the rest of my life so it did :( |
By:
ho can people not know the answer to this :^0
if the ball has to travel further then obviously it takes longer land! |
By:
When I was at primary school our teacher asked us how many mountains we could name. We got Everest and K2 and Ben Nevis and Snowdon...well I did, I knew my mountains even back then
Any more, he asked? "Kenchanjunga" "You're just making them up now" It's the THIRD highest mountain in the world. Thirty years later, the injustice still grates. |
By:
Oh gawd.
And you lot wonder why you have to sleep in the park and beg for change :( |
By:
Blackjack: I suppose I must concede they may land at a slightly different moment due to wind resistance, earth curvature, and all the other variables thrown up during this discussion. This is not what I meant though as many believe they will land at significantly different times.
And I would like to point out that they might still land at the same time despite all those other variables, so its not a fact as you say. Thank you. |
By:
MM did u expect one to land 10 seconds before the other?
seriously they are always gonna land at a fairly similiar time. but the exact answer to the question u asked is that NO they wont land at the same time. MM you asked the questions and got far more of an answer for your money than you bargained for to be fair. I agree Orioles with the vacuum they would be the same but you changed that to suit your answer. No mention of vauums at the top of the eiffel tower... thats not meant to be arsey or fun just saying it how the question was. answer is NO |
By:
MM did u expect one to land 10 seconds before the other?
No, I expected them to land at the same time. Surely I made this clear several times. MM you asked the questions and got far more of an answer for your money than you bargained for to be fair I did not. I got exactly what I expected. |

just got back from the pub. having dinner in a minute. when i get a minute i will obviously disprove orioles' lame arguments. gimme 45ish minutes or so.
just read his first response, and am frankly disappointed in his efforts. |
By:
Please don't repeat this stuff to your children on the eve of their exams :(
It's no bleedin' wonder we don't have any science teachers. I'm going to bed ... to weep. |
By:
Oh, hold on, I'll wait for Stephen Hawking's latest contribution ;)
By:
**Google smoking gently at RD's**
By:
45 minutes lol
By:
I can't be bothered to read all the replies, but did anyone note that the horizontally-fired ball would take longer because of the curvature of the Earth?
By:
Yes they did Göring.
By:
Orioles thinks that if you jump out of plane and your parachute doesn't open it wouldn't matter 'cos you'd land at the same time anyway.
In fact he tried the experiment, but he landed on his head :( |
By:
Orioles jumping out of an aircraft without a parachute is quite a leap from two golf balls off the Eiffel Tower. I think it's too different to be comparable and I'll have to disallow it I'm afraid.
By:
I see gus is a recycler!
By:
How about Orioles jumping off the Eiffel Tower without a parachute?
By:
Yes, that would work. And if you could fire his clone from a cannon as well, they would land at the same time (wind resistance, earth curvature, box of feathers and a hoover permitting ffs).
By:
THE CANNON ONE WILL REACH THE GROUND FIRST,HAVE YOU NOT HEARD OF VELOCITY
By:
DWD you join this discussion late, whilst i may be rational to fire Orioles (or his clown) directly at the ground, for the purpose of the question, he needs to be fired at an angle of 90 degrees.
By:
lol his clone
By:
YOU CAN FIRE IT AT ANY ANGLE YOU WANT SO LONG AS IT IS AT 90 DEGREES WHEN ITS LEVEL WITH THE OTHER GOLF BALL

You can only examine what happens without (as I mentioned earlier) introducing variables to defeat the scientific principles. If you introduce those variables, then the chap who suggested that if the golf ball achieved escape velocity, the dropped ball would hit the ground first, would be as correct as anyone else. This is the sort of question anybody who has studied physics would answer immediately. They hit the ground at the same time. It's barely above a quiz question. You've been caught **ting, RD. Best leave it. introducing variables!! did i introduce air resistance? it is quite a simple concept, not doubted by any scientist's in the world. christ on a bike. best leave it kiddio. |
By:
45 minutes for that?
A grade at A Level Physics :^0 The Narnia Examination Board, RD? I even made a series of not so subtle hints, to point you in the right direction. Pisa, Galileo. You managed Newton, but couldn't quite bring it all together. Like I said, this is very basic stuff and the answer is a favourite in quizzes. The fact that you're clearly not sure, is either a terrible indictment of the examination system, or you're guessing. |
