From a powerful cannon facing straight out (not angled into the air) and dropped another golf ball over the side at the same time, which one would hit the floor first? I think they would land at the same time. Is this correct?

yes.

next question?

I think they would. A long way apart distance wise of course, but gravity would act on them at the same rate so they would land at the same time.

interesting ?:|, perhaps some1 can try on their next visit to Paris ;-)

surely the energy on the golf ball from being shot from the cannon would work against the graitity for a hort time

and so they wouldn't land at the same time

This might be one of those problems that are counterintuitive but I'm with J1.
If the cannon is firing the ball out horizonatally then time must be used up before it begins its descent. Meanwhile the dropped ball is landing on a Parisian's head.

cant we just fire golf balls directly at the people of paris rather than make lame excuses for doing so
By:

When: 08 May 09 16:33
No, I don't think so J. The energy would be making go further distance wise, but it would be falling to the ground at the same rate as the golf ball dropped over the side of the tower I believe.

No Lisa, the golf ball would be falling from the moment it left the cannon.

trust me, I've done this many times, they hit the ground at the same time

Lets assume the cannon has a (theoretical) range of 10 miles. Can it really take that long for the ball to drop from the top to the bottom?

I suspect that the ball droped directly would reach the ground first due to air resistance .

If you imagine doing the same thing with two ballons standing on a chair dropping one of them and batting the other away from you with a tennis racket say.

If the cannon had a range of 10 miles, as you say, it would cover those 10 miles in the same time (let's say 10 seconds) that the second golf ball took to hit the ground below the Eiffel Tower.

They'll land at the same time.

There isn't a delay on gravity acting upon the ball once it leaves the cannon just because there happens to be a horizontal force on the ball. Once it leaves the cannon it's falling.

I particularly like the way you have used the French word for balloon, Honest Novice, a nice touch.

Did NONE of you go to school? This is a basic O Level physics question.

I just chucked a balbearing out of my bathroom window whilst at the same time allowed one to drop from my other hand. The neighbours bathroom window is now broken.

OK Munchy - so it is a counterintuitive one. Thanks. I suppose that's why the question exists in the first place.

If you drop a feather and alead wieght form the top of an eival tower on the moon with no greavity they both hit the ground at the same time.

Not so if their is air resistance lead weight gets there first.

The lead weight and the feather have different terminal speeds gravity will not acclerate them above that speed
