agree about the violence though Sir Denis
Gladiator's a decent film if you haven't already seen it 3 times |
By:
i started a thread before about a British film called final cut, it stars jude law and ray winstone, not too of my fav actors, but the film is great.
i would probably go as far as to say it's my fav british film. if you ever see it in the shop, or amazon, ya should pick it up. |

its true - most films are basically rubbish, the filmakers would do well to focus on storyline, try makiing a film which actually moves people in some way, im amazed they make any money at all with the drss they serve up, ALL computer animated are dire, nearly all action films involve the same car chases, fights, sex scenes etc...
now take days of heaven...theres a film which has u entranced, good storyline, fantastic photography and music score...good acting etc |

Mc Moonbeam 11 Jan 15:16 agree about the violence though Sir Denis Gladiator's a decent film if you haven't already seen it 3 times You are aware of course of the entire premise of Gladiator and what Gladiators were and thus confirm this statement was a funny joke? |

got sky movies for the missis a year ago ,can count on one hand the number of films i've watched on their
also normally use the rule that if it won an oscar its not worth watching |

tony broke and big h showing some taste on here.
I have Malick as the only true great still making films. A visual genius, to make a cynic like me weep over Pochahontas in The New World is a rare trick. Sadly he will clear the mutliplexes again this year with 'Tree of Life'. The population will pile in to see Brad Pitt and last 30 minutes tops. A few will slow down and sink into it though, and then they are hooked. See any Malick on youtube, esp Thin Red Line. Pretentious garbage or Genius? I wasn't sure first time out either. They can't stop thinking about it. Even the haters can't leave it alone. |
By:
The Departed was quite bad.
By:
Malick is a first rate call.
But Guillermo Del Toro, Gilliam, Haneke and Herzog are still working so there are still legendary auteur's working imo. |
By:
also Pedro Almodóvar and Paul Greengrass.
By:
The Departed was one of his worst films, but they gave him a long service oscar for it. The oscars have nothing to do with the quality of a film.
If you want a laugh, have a look at the Guardian's top 100 of decade. Not funny for the over reliance on art films, though there is a bit of that. They have Borat at number 2. LOL. Honestly. |
By:
The Departed is an unfortunate case as it's another example of Hollywood turning in a journeyman version of an incredible original, in this case the Hong Kong thriller Infernal Affairs, which is an incredible film.
By:
You are right of course. Herzog especially, but he's dissapointed me a bit with his mainstream stuff recently.
Greengrass getting nothing for United 93 is one of the worst oscar robberies ever. The hapless Guardian have not got it in their top 100. They should be mocked for years for that list. |

Hsn't been a good film since Shawshank. I watched 'Taken' two weeks ago, starring Liam Neeson, on my eldest daughters recommendation as he's a bit of a bastid in it. I enjoyed it. :) |

I watched 'Taken' two weeks ago, starring Liam Neeson, on my eldest daughters recommendation as he's a bit of a bastid in it. I enjoyed it. :) Caught moments of Love Actually about four times over christmas whilst itv had it on perma-loop. Was tragic seeing him acting the role of a man who's lost his wife after this year. He does do relentless very well though. And you're right re Herzog Ghostdog. Though I have faith for the future. Someone just needs to try and shoot him again. That'll jog him out of his fug. |

most films based on books are sh1t - why not just read the book ffs?
By:
hmm well they did leave the best two scenes from the book out of Jurassic Park yes!
By:
imho. Worth making time to watch the Godfather movies.
By:
Micheal Haneke is the future of cinema if he carries on his trend towards the more mainstream.
Saw his Code Unkown two weeks ago. Interconnected/disconnected fragments from the lives of a parisian actress, Malian immigrant and Romanian beggar. With some deaf and dumb kids and drum workshops thrown in. Would go down a treat on here. Lol. |
By:
it's no Braveheart that's for sure!
Sometimes i think Downfall is a vision from the future of the last days of the Betfair Forums ;) The flaw in this thread is though..... If it had said most films that my multiplex gets are ** i'd have whole heartedly agreed. But I am confident that if I knew a person and what they liked I could find 30-40 films every year that they loved. It's just about where you look. |
By:
All Tarantino films are brilliant imo. Latest offering - Inglorious Basterds - was excellent
By:
It's the lack of imagination that gets me, the writers seem to see something that makes money and copy it, hence all the sequels and
Films about comic book super heroes, Werewolves Vampires Wizards **king rom coms, every one of them with the same premise. |
By:
You are dead on johnny, really did lol at downfall. The multiplex and the art film have gone in opposite directions. A great classic like the Godfather would probably fail now, with it's pace and dark textures.
But as the man says, you can dig out great films. Don't be put off by the art tag. Proper acting, framing and real world timing have a hypnotic effect when done properly. And Tarantino is probably the best link between the two worlds at the moment. Any fans of Herzog, or curious, here he is being interviewed making Fitzcaraldo. Who says Germans don't have a sense of humour: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3xQyQnXrLb0 |
