Apparantly grit/salt being imported won't arrive until Jan 22nd.

Will it be a waste of money ?
Will the thaw be on by then ?

Whilst the extent of the cold snap could not be predicted it does seem to be very poorly dealt with.
I'm not sure whether a worse case scenario was prepared for at all. Although could you actually say that what we have had is worst than could have been reasonably predicted.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't the weather forecasters suggest we would be in for a "Barbecue winter". Perhaps that was tongue in cheek. But to go from that to worst for 50 yrs or whatever is pretty poor forecasting.

I remember that prediction of a warm winter :)
Report brendanuk1 • January 10, 2010 10:18 AM GMT
salt water works just as well
Report 8sid • January 10, 2010 10:25 AM GMT
personally I think they should use a helicopter (like they do during bush fires)

scoop up loads of salt from France or some where and then just start randomly throwing it around the UK.

Councils are run by a bunch of totally incompetent morons wasting miliions and millions of pounds of our money. Anybody with half a brain could walk into any council department and save a fortune while at the same time providing a better service. The time to stock up on road salt was BEFORE the event. Why skimp on a resource that lasts indefinitely and endanger the entire country. They should hold sufficient salt stocks to last for 3 months at least. After all, if they don't need it they can always use it next year.
Report 8sid • January 10, 2010 10:32 AM GMT
NOT true Kevin

salt has use by date im afraid
Report Ibrahima Sonko • January 10, 2010 10:35 AM GMT
the problem is we live in a society where if something happens they must blame someone. If they stock up on too much salt and the cold spell disappears then someone will be moaning about wasting money on stockpiling salt.
Report Kevin1958 • January 10, 2010 10:36 AM GMT
How can salt have a bloody use by date?
Report GPT • January 10, 2010 10:36 AM GMT
Yes but the one eyed jocko and his fellow idiots put a stop to that last year, another Labour** up.

"the problem is we live in a society where if something happens they must blame someone."

No the problem is with live in a society where most people working for the government or local council are totally incompetent. That is a sad but unfortunatly true fact of life.

they were talking about the granules, and how it works, when kept in storage its loses how effective it can be, depending on how the salt were stored.

was on news yesterday.

the way the counil stores salt they will not keep a massive stock as they would like to im afraid.
Report BurtSaddo. • January 10, 2010 10:41 AM GMT
they use a liquid salt solution in sweden, supposed to work much faster
Report Kevin1958 • January 10, 2010 10:42 AM GMT
As you say "depending how it's stored".

They need to store it correctly.

indeed and the way we store it here is not suitable for long term

hence they norm only keep for 3 month periods
Report FatherMaguire • January 10, 2010 10:47 AM GMT
Out of interest, how should it be stored Kevin? - which is the most cost-effective storage solution?
Report Kevin1958 • January 10, 2010 10:49 AM GMT
So do you think it might be a good idea to consider storing it in such a way that they could keep it indefinitely; and hence store salt in larger quantities thereby avoiding the possibility of repeating this fiasco?
Report Kevin1958 • January 10, 2010 10:52 AM GMT
"Out of interest, how should it be stored Kevin? - which is the most cost-effective storage solution?"

Well I would hazard a guess that if it were stored in a warm dry environment it would last indefinitely. As for cost effective; how much do you think a working traffic infrastructure is worth to our economy?
Report munch man • January 10, 2010 11:16 AM GMT
if we could somehow speed up global warming so the sea floods all the roads all that salty water would melt the ice quick sharp imo.
Report Mandylou • January 10, 2010 11:46 AM GMT
majority of the councils had ordered in good time and were promised deliveries weeks ago - they havent arrived and cant be mined quick enough when massive loads are asked for and as pointed out it doesent store in grit form that well

Report Sir Denis Eton-Hogg • January 10, 2010 1:23 PM GMT
its pretty inevitable that when you have the worst winter for several decades the authorities will struggle to cope.
Report Kevin1958 • January 10, 2010 2:26 PM GMT

Report punterfleecer • January 10, 2010 2:43 PM GMT
don't yous have salt skips down there where you can collect your own?

we do in this council, the grit's been there for years, and finally being used now by the community and it seems effective

I'd do some spreading myself but I don't have a spade
