NEVER SEEN ONE BEFORE AND I WAS WONDERING IF THE SNOW HAD ATTRACTED THEM FROM ABROAD.

IT IS ABOUT THE SIZE OF A BLACKBIRD
ITS BODY IS ALL BLUEY GREY
ITS HEAD IS YELLOW AND BLACK (MAYBE A BIT OF RED) AND HAS A SORT OF CROWN OR CREST
IT STANDS VERY UPRIGHT LIKE A PARROT OR**ATOO

Apart from the body colour (pinkish) sounds like a waxwing which come over here from Scandinavia in hard winters. Google a pic and let us know if that's it.

IVE LOOKED UP A WAXWING AND IT IS VERY SIMILAR INDEED, BUT ITS NOT ONE OF THEM. ITS BODY IS NEARLY ALL GREYISH, BLUEY COLOUR. BUT VERY SIMILAR TO A WAXWING. GOOD CALL.

Can you take a photo?
Report blackbarn • January 10, 2010 10:20 AM GMT
louis - where are you??. (North east??) Wur almost certainly right, plenty of black/yellow on Waxwings, but predominately pinkish, and no yellow on the head.
Report wur • January 10, 2010 10:20 AM GMT
I've had a look, and they're more blue than I thought. Other winter visitors are redwings and fieldfares, which are blackbird sized and flock in fields, but don't have crests.

KL

Don't know about the Bohenium bit - its called simply a Waxwing.
Apart from the distinctive crest - a clear indicator is the bright yellow tip to its tail.
