I'm argung my wife that -10 is not twice as cold as -5 because I just know it's just not right but have nothing to support me. She has simple arithmetic: 10p is 2*5. HEEEEELP!!

0 has only been chosen because it is the freezing point of water, therefore cannot be used to measure whether something is twice as cold as something else.

If absolute zero is the coldest temperature possible, then measurements should be taken from there - if there is no coldest temperature, as in no-one knows how cold it can possibly get, then it would be impossible to define something being twice as cold as something else.

you are only able to say something is twice as tall as something else because you have a reference point of 0 - ie no height, therefore 6 feet is twice as tall as 3 feet.
