the pixies would rank alongside a lot of the english bands i agree i do like them but the strokes?

built up by NME hype and did nothing in their own country really, as do few of the popular americanbands over here..

think the USA have the upper hand at the moment. Off the top of my head the following have all produced some good music in the last couple of years

The Hold Steady
The Shins
Band of Horses
Fleet Foxes
Interpol
Decemberists
Wilco
Lambchop
Yeah Yeah Yeahs
Vampire Weekend
Sufjan Stevens
Silversun Pickups
My Morning Jacket
Mercury Rev
Kings of**
Iron & Wine
Foo Fighters
Kurt Vile

who have we got apart from British Sea Power?

Two have already got it. Without the Velvet Underground most of the bands on this thread would not exist.

Hippy era: Jimmy Hendrix. My old man saw first uk tour and was in shock, changed his life.

Accessible indie: Pixies. A riot live. Saw their second ever gig in uk. 50 people there. Eighteen months later headlined Reading.

If you term Simon and Garfunkel a band, then they've gotta be right up there.

Television were good, but I blame them for the last 5 years of Jerky new wave **e.

Suicide have aged well. Still fking people up on youtube 25 years later.

Tamla Motown
Soul music
R& B

Uncle Tupelo - The greatest alternative country band who has ever made music, and sounds as good now as it did then. Truely wonderful band. Pixies a close 2nd for me.

Hoss makes a good point. I listen to mostly rock and indie pop, but the greatest voice belonged to Levi Stubbs of the Four Tops. Incredible emotion and power without compare.

BigH - One of my favourite albums. Postcard is about as good as music can possibly be! I love Wilco and i don't mind Son Volt but UT were unique.

Hoss makes a better point than that. I just automatically think of Indie type bands, but that lot more than likely smash em to bits

actually, 'band' is the key. 'Groups' in the title may find a more less obvious response
