People that profess to have a strong opinion on one of greatest debatable subjects, but cant spell a simple word like argument actually and genuinely make me laugh out loud.

Creationists believe the world was created about 3000 years ago

Anyone believing that to be true must be deranged
Report Tevez is God • January 8, 2010 12:03 PM GMT
floz, please elaborate on the evolution angle?
Report CUPRA • January 8, 2010 12:04 PM GMT
When is the word 'elucidate' more suitable than 'elaborate' please? Honest question

Where have you heard that?
Report The Dragon • January 8, 2010 12:06 PM GMT
elucidate means to make clearer

elaborate means to enlarge on
Report CUPRA • January 8, 2010 12:07 PM GMT
Oh right, can you expand on that please?

On 22 October 1996, in a speech to the Pontifical Academy of Sciences plenary session at the Vatican, Pope John Paul II declared the evolutionary theories of Charles Darwin as factual, and wholly compatible with the teachings of the Roman Catholic Church
Report Kevin1958 • January 8, 2010 12:19 PM GMT
That just goes to prove what a total tool the Pope is then.

BBC programme a couple of months ago - the presenter ( I think he was a scientist) asked a few American creationists. They claimed the earth was 3000 years old because it said so in the Bible. One guy even claimed to have narrowed it down to a particular date!!

I will have a dig around to see if I can find a bit more info

from memory I think the Jews have it at 4026BC. BC bit obviously put in Christian calender terms

That is a reflection of the lack of biblical knowledge exhibited by the creationists in question. I am not a bible student but I know the bible says that Adam & Eve were created around 7,000 years ago but a formless earth existed

Evolution seems to be based on a huge body of scientific evidence, research and the body of evidence seems to offer it as a pretty realistic and senible theory (if not excatl ytotally water tight)

Creationists are just nut jobs who by en large believe the old testament word for word and believe we evolved from slime. They also believe in Ada and Eve ffs!
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • January 8, 2010 12:32 PM GMT
Interestngly Richard Dawkins said that "among the things that science does know, evolution is about as certain as anything we know".

When challenged with it's still only a theory he says

"evolution has been observed. It's just that it hasn't been observed while it's happening." He adds that "it is rather like a detective coming on a murder after the scene... the detective hasn't actually seen the murder take place, of course. But what you do see is a massive clue... Huge quantities of circumstantial evidence.

In the early 17th century, an Irish bishop, James Ussher, thought he had the answer. After a life's work of meticulous study and calculation, the theologian finally settled on a date: the world was created on Saturday 22 October, 4004 BC.

I thought it was only mid-American christian fundamentalists that believed in creationism these days.

I hope this isn't more of their sh!t coming over here.

Evolution looks plausable to me, in hot countries over time mans skin darkens his nose flattens and his hair curls and thickens to adapt to heat, in cold climates man goes pale and blonde. Over thousands of years man, animals, inects adapt and evolve to their environment to survive, I could go with this. Creationism just sounds to me like made up nonsense.
Report Injera • January 8, 2010 4:08 PM GMT
There is evolution within species. Not without. Imo.

Evolutionary teaching of youngsters will often be the former not the latter.
Report HH Sultan Vinegar • January 8, 2010 4:13 PM GMT
one point then - why don't the Eskimos (Innuits) have blonde hair?
Report garlicbread • January 8, 2010 4:40 PM GMT
Well let's look at this from a position of eveidence:

Evolution
Can strongly be seen in just about every aspect of the animal kingdom, and indeed the plant kingdom. Works on the fundamental levels of logic and science

Geologists, biologists, physicists and all manner of clever people can explain many many things in the world around us, due to evolution, and those evolutionary processes which we don't yet understand will surely one day be grasped.

Creationism
Not a single shred of evidence whatsoever in all of human and galactic history, for even a microbe of God like or other all-powerful being. There is no basis in fact, nor has there ever been for anything having come into existence, or ceasing to exist due to the theory of creationism.

In short, evolution is right, creationism is utter b0llock.s

Why would Eskimos have blond hair - they ned to absorb what little warmth there is not reflect it away.
Report Injera • January 8, 2010 5:28 PM GMT
Garlic - 'no evidence of God'?? You obviously haven't read much about Darwin's comments then.

How about you go to the Natural History Museum and ask to see all of their transitional fossils?
