Knowing how to drive in snow and icy conditions is the key. Lost count of the number of drivers i've seen that just don't have a clue how to drive in these conditions.

heavier the better in snow and ice. 4WD obviously is best but front engine FF cars will get the best grip otherwise.

Were you in it EGG? The reason not to is based more on carbon monoxide poisoning than fuel consumption.

Lucky to be alive if the H&S tristams are to be believed. Apparently CO will build up under your car, seep in and silently kill you. A slower means than by the old hosepipe in the garage routine.

i've got a civic type S as well. didn't even attempt going down the hill in it today. well i might have slid down, but no way back up again.
although there is a way that if I go round the block I would be going downhill to my driveway, thus avoiding the uphill bit |

it would probably be something small with 4x4 like a panda 4x4.
a few snow seasons ago i had a rear wheel drive(obv) auto BMW. As you trickled along minimum speed with the foot off the gas but just ever so lightly touched the brakes when gently coming to a set of lights, or geting too near to the car in front, the front wheels locked whilst the back ones kept driving. causes total loss of control and was quite worrying. i actually overtook one on a gentle incline that had gone into the kerb and been temporarily abandond and could fully understand why. anyway, after several crashes and fatalities... lol, nar 20 mins or so... i realised it was because the wheels at the back were still powering through the gentle braking meaning the car was trying to stop on two front wheels which is of course not the best way. the solution was to knock it out out of gear( neutral ) each time you wanted to stop gently or was going to fast in traffic and it never happened again. just sharing my tale with you all so hopefully be of use to some. definately allowed me to make an otherwise impossible journy home that day and been useful since... |

i think the bigger 4x4s have too much momentum to change the direction easily on slippery surfaces with less room left on narrow roads for slides and skids.
cars with broken heating are also far safer to drive because you can FEEL the road is dangerous cause it's so damn cold, these sl4gs flying along in a 09 Range are oblivous to black ice lol while we are on the subject, anyone here got experience of a small Smart car in these conditions??? |
|

One got caught under my wheels the other day. Pesky things.

Cooperman is right I reckon; more how than what. Assuming your driving is all on slow and slippy surfaces, taking 3 or 4 lbs out of tyre pressures can help a bit too.
|
|
By:
try to as much as possible in a straight line, acceleration, braking etc and dont turn into a corner unless your going so slow you think your about to stop. if you start to slide under braking, come off thebrake nad back on again more softly. if you start to slide round a corner come off all pedals and use opposite lock until you slide to a halt. easy really, whatever you do dont panic!

My Vw polo 1999 model is a beast in these conditions.Dont know why but it just seems to have some great grip. I live in a small culdesac of about 10 houses-during the last lot of snow 2 weeks ago, i was the only one who could get up our road-made me chuckle watching all the neighbours in sports cars sliding about (i eventually helped them)
What really makes me laugh is the drivers (a lot of them women) who think the best way to get up an incline is to accelerate as hard as possible and get those wheels spinning! Idiots! |
|
By:
my old polo, was similar, might have been the thin tyres, some of these people carriers struggle, saw a Galaxy today, seemed to be really struggling, my Focus is ok, but it's Auto, I could do with a lower gear for going down hills.
