you could use any turntable, hooked to audio in on a soundcard
think there are some USB converters from any turntable as well. http://forums.techguy.org/multimedia/399953-turntable-computer-hook-up.html Maplins have an ION USB turntable that will do the job easily |

Ive got a SoundBlaster X-Fi Elite Pro, you can just plug a mixer or whatever into the phono inputs, it automatically records at the perfect level and you can tweak all kinds of stuff after.

You need to use a good quality deck and a good stylus. If you don't extract the signal from the disc in the first place, then nothing you do later can put it onto the soundtrack.
Your signal source is always the most important stage. Beware any 'automatic level control' facility. This may be useful for speech but will compress musical passages (it makes the quiet bits louder and the loud bits quieter)! To be honest, most morons (the graphic equaliser brigade, bass and treble control freaks) etc wouldn't know the difference. :-( |

I've got one of them things for putting video tapes onto DVDs but I was give it as a present and they didn't supply the right wires. Should be alright when I get them. I've got videos I haven't seen in years mostly old comedies.

You're lucky you never had to listen to Radio Luxembourg back in the sixties then. Any sound would do in those days. That was when you could have a trannie without getting looked at.

fawwon. Truly pleased to hear that. I would imagine, though, that you could appreciate why I felt the need to warn of any 'automatic level control' faciility. It could certainly make things sound a bit undynamic! :-)

Classy. |

Yes I agree naydam, some of the efforts uploaded on youtube are a shambles.
A previous soundcard I had come with some rubbish, if you stuck to their auto level you couldn't even make out any sound. |

I've just checked on eBay. Home audio/HiFi section...QED Discsaver should do the trick for the O.P. or anybody wishing to download from vynil with a moving magnet (the usual one) cartridge.
