The NHS won't allow people to pay extra for drugs that it does not provide that might aid them when they are ill (saying it would create a two-tier system).

Does the same thing apply to surgery and, more pertinently for me, to diagnostic procedures?

I'm thinking of jumping the queue for an MRI scan by paying for it, but won't if that loses me all other NHS services including care and drugs.

Thanks to anyone who can help.

It doesn't. I opted for a private MRI (try lifescan.co.uk)and then for a private consultant at the Nuffield but I was still actually under the care of my GP and switched between private and NHS for various procedures
