Recently discovered Media Monkey. A really nice music library application that outdoes iTunes and Windows Media Player in every way.

www.mediamonkey.com

Free version is perfectly good enough.

Some of you will know of it, but if you've never heard of it then it's well worth a look.

Does it play FLAC files ok, itunes seems to have a problem with them.
Report cunnybobbler • January 4, 2010 4:57 PM GMT
tried it, uninstalled it after 15 minutes. cant remember why but it did stuff i didnt want it to do an i couldnt find settings to change it so gave up.
Report garlicbread • January 4, 2010 5:04 PM GMT
It's supposed to support FLAC, but I don't have any such files.

I'm just a MP3/WMA user and it's flawless with those (as you'd expect)

It's the ease of ripping/tagging/organising that I really like.

Playlists work brilliantly with my little Sansa Clip player too.

Cool, cheers.
Report cunnybobbler • January 4, 2010 5:07 PM GMT
i may be wrong but i think it copied all my music three times into the library and the organised them all in alphabetical order which i couldnt seem to change.

I have all of my music on a networked hard drive. I access it from 3 machines, an internet radio and a PS3.

The setup asked where to look for music so I told it. It scanned 4000 tracks in a few minutes and I can just click on whichever header to sort it that way. Headers range from album, artist, album, bitrate, length....

When I 'acquire' a new album I just copy it to the external drive and tell MM to rescan the new folder.

ID4 tag editing is an absolute doddle and the internet lookup of tracks works perfectly once you change the server to us.freedb.org

It also supports all sorts of podcasts and internet radio stations (though I only ever listen to Alex Jones)

Can't speak highly enough of it.

does it work on a Mac?
Report everythings gone green • January 4, 2010 7:42 PM GMT
Does it rip FLAC?

Been looking for a decent FLAC ripper.
Report garlicbread • January 4, 2010 7:47 PM GMT
Don't know about working on a Mac, I doubt it :-(

About to try ripping a FLAC right now.
Report everythings gone green • January 4, 2010 7:48 PM GMT
I gave up on the original FLAC ripper on Windows 7. Reading forums it seems everyone else has as well.
Report Reyes • January 4, 2010 7:48 PM GMT
good stuff ;)
Report garlicbread • January 4, 2010 7:50 PM GMT
Yeah, ripped perfectly to FLAC. I'll upload the file for you to hear. Hang on a sec...

Report Reyes • January 4, 2010 7:55 PM GMT
how does it compress it without sacrificing on quality?

i thought mp3 worked by lopping off the top and bottom freqs thus reducing file size. If so, how does this manage it?
Report garlicbread • January 4, 2010 7:56 PM GMT
Yeah, my boy is frighteningly good at COD.

dont spose anybody knows how i get the toolbars/taskbars i dunno whatever theyre called back on opera? i closed them all to watch videos but now i cant get them back. done a search but all i can find is "click of file" or whatever, i cant click on anything cos i dont have any taskbars toolbars whatsoever! i tried uninstalling/reinstalling opera but it just came back the exact same way as it was before with no taskbars. it must remember your last settings or something i dunno.
Report garlicbread • January 4, 2010 7:59 PM GMT
Dunno mate, but lossless compression is certainly possible.

.gif files for example are smaller than the equivalent .bmp (of course, you can only use 256 colours)

Once stuff starts getting repeated it's easy enough to compress I suppose. You could compress the following text without data loss:

this is a sentence, this is a sentence, this is a sentence, this is a sentence, this is a sentence, this is a sentence, this is a sentence.

See what I mean?
Report everythings gone green • January 4, 2010 7:59 PM GMT
FLAC is not compressed is it? Thought that was why the beard strokers love it.
Report Reyes • January 4, 2010 8:00 PM GMT
perhaps my music is a tad less repetitive than yours :D
Report Reyes • January 4, 2010 8:01 PM GMT
seems it is EGG, hence my q:

FLAC stands for Free Lossless Audio Codec, an audio format similar to MP3, but lossless, meaning that audio is compressed in FLAC without any loss in quality. This is similar to how Zip works, except with FLAC you will get much better compression because it is designed specifically for audio, and you can play back compressed FLAC files in your favorite player
Report garlicbread • January 4, 2010 8:02 PM GMT
Yeah, there was a 'how much compression' option when I just ripped a New Order track.

I used none and cannot in any way tell the difference from the CD track.
Report everythings gone green • January 4, 2010 8:03 PM GMT
Ah I see. Lossless does not mean not compressed.
Report everythings gone green • January 4, 2010 8:06 PM GMT
I've just bought a Cowon S9 for my travels and am trying to fill it up with FLAC files.

New Order is one of the artists I'm replacing the MP3s with FLAC.

Finding it easier to just use my favourite file sharing network rather than ripping.
