There is one in Crystal Palace round the corner from my local that I go to to see my mates, The Postal Order it is called. It is full of the great unwashed as a rule so give it a swerve. Besides, my local there shows all the horse racing and all my mates in Sarf London are punters although the beer is three or more times the price so that´s where I go.

Slippy, I would love to go into a racing pub but I have felt very uncomfortable when I have tried - there are hardly any women there. The great thing about Wetherspoons is that there are women there and for me that is the most important thing. They have also got great alcoves so I can read in peace. I think the clientele differs to where they are situated. In my one you only get a few chavs in the summer sitting outside in the garden. Wetherspoons are also very big so a woman on her own does not stand out so much. When I have tried small pubs I have felt all eyes on me.

Saw the thread title and thought annie might have opened the first Chit Chat greasy spoon with a drinks license.

Camden Weatherspoons!! jesus!

A stunning example of the chaim imo! this gaff vaguely reminds me of the clientele that once used to frequent the legendary "Scotsman" pub in Kings Cross

Too cold out for lurking round car parks and laybys with Stan Collymore.

For posters who have yet to frequent a Wetherspoons do not let the above replies put you off. There are over 700 and I am sure you can find one to your satisfaction. I have visited several and I do not recognize the descriptions above. Maybe the fact that I do not visit the ones in chavvy areas is a factor. This is not a recommendation for Wetherspoons, as I believe they are badly managed, but, maybe because I am a woman, they are the best of a bad job. I would love to have a proper local but so far my efforts to find one have come to nothing.

As a favour to you, and purely in the name of consumer research, I am volunteering to accompany you to your local for a bargain drink. We will then keep visiting different pubs until you find one you are happy with, even if it takes hours, days, months or even years.

Is it true that Wetherspoons buy up the beer returned to breweries and serve that ?

I'm not sure beer ages that well.

They buy when from breweries when its close to sell by date ( ie 2 or 3 weeks) and then churn it out

hence some many good value guests ales

Your highness, you can now tell women how you gave a woman agony and extasy at the same time...

I am suffering from that bug going around, a nasty cold and chesty cough. Unfortunately, your post to me set me off - it would normally should have been pleasant hysterics but today was a painful episode of dry, racking coughs. Thank You :)
