"The Myth of the Flat Earth is the modern misconception that the prevailing cosmological view during the Middle Ages saw the Earth as flat, instead of spherical. During the early Middle Ages, many scholars maintained the spherical viewpoint first expressed by the Ancient Greeks.

By the 14th century, belief in a flat earth among the educated was essentially dead. Flat-Earth models were in fact held at earlier (pre-medieval) times, before the spherical model became commonly accepted in Hellenistic astronomy.

According to Stephen Jay Gould, "there never was a period of

"The first accounts of the legend have been traced to the 1830s. In 1828, Washington Irving's highly romanticised and inaccurate biography, The Life and Voyages of Christopher Columbus,] was published and mistaken by many for a scholarly work.

In Book III, Chapter II of this biography, Irving gave a largely fictional account of the meetings of a commission established by the Spanish sovereigns to examine Columbus's proposals. One of his more fanciful embellishments was a highly unlikely tale that the more ignorant and bigoted members on the commission had raised scriptural objections to Columbus's assertions that the Earth was spherical." Their worship is a farce, for they replace God's commands with their own man-made teachings.' For you ignore God's specific laws and substitute your own traditions." (Mark 7:6-8)

C&P something I rarely do in these threads although Vel seems to need others to make up his mind.

http://uncyclopedia.wikia.com/wiki/HowTo:Start_a_Religion

Please ignore the word God and replace it with the bold writing.

A religion is worthless if you don't have people to worship it.

* People should trust God you completely.
* People should hand control of their lives over to God you.
* People should think you're wonderful and lordly.
* People should cringe in abject remorse when you tell them theyve broken God's law. your rules.
* People should overlook the things you do wrong because you're God or at least a special representative of God.
Report brendanuk1 • January 2, 2010 1:22 PM GMT
if we expect capitalism to be about for a while, being pally with the money should be essential for any new religion.

Vel from I was born until I was 16 I only ever knew about 1 religion. School didn't teach me about alternatives yet R.E. was compulsory. I then began to find out on my own means about other religion's and science.

I've read LOADS of different sources and the more I read into religion the more I know it is wrong. Everything can be explained by scientific means, it doesn't need a creator to run the universe, besides, who created the creator.

If I read something and don't understand it, I question it, I look for further answers. I don't take something at face value because I read it somewhere.

I remember arguing wit a Christian when I was about 21. It was an argument about the size of the Universe. I couldn't tell him why we knew the Andromeda Galaxy was 2.2 million light years away (and 2.2 million years old at least). I found out the answer but I didn't take the scientists word at face value until I understood how they worked it out.

You on the other hand take everything at face value without question. Religion has brainwashed you, you need to ask questions. The World spent 1500 years in the dark ages because of people like you.
Report brendanuk1 • January 2, 2010 2:11 PM GMT

"The World spent 1500 years in the dark ages because of people like you."

That passage reveals a fierce, lazy bigotry.
------------------------

Could you be more specific? Are you talking about monks and priests and the like? Don't you understand that Christian monks helped PRESERVE knowledge by founding schools and copying books in beautiful script? Also, they believed in a rational, logical universe made by a rational Creator? So they began to examine the world rationally...

I could mention many, many monks and clergymen who were scientists or educators...but here is just one name : GREGOR MENDEL.

Just saying the word "science" in the way you do (totemically) is almost a form of magic. Don't you understand that many scientific views find parallels in religion? That's why Oppenheimer quoted from the Bhagavad-Gita when the first atomic bomb was tested.

Anyone who knows about quantum physics can speak about how the scientist-viewer can actually effect an experiment by merely observing it - in other words, we could say - yes, "we" - that reality is subjective and objective at the same time.
Report Ovalman. • January 2, 2010 2:42 PM GMT
Religion suppressed knowledge as it was a method of control over the masses. Anyone with differing views were persecuted, even killed. Science and religion do not mix very well.

Were scientists responsible for the atomic bomb?

Niels Bohr :

"Bohr was born in Copenhagen, Denmark, in 1885. His father, Christian Bohr, a devout Lutheran, was professor of physiology at the University of Copenhagen (it is his name which is given to the Bohr shift or Bohr effect)."

Bohr was influenced by Soren Kierkegaard (theologian) - for example, the idea in quantum theory that a particle can simultaneously exist as a wave and solid particle is almost mirroring the biblical idea that God exists as three beings who are ONE. Bohr is said to have thought of the idea after hearing a church sermon.

In other words, quantum scientists are very fond of using metaphors and idealistic-models to get their view across.
