Don't mind playing in the FA Cup-had a good game last year with SLB I think it was. 48 questions, 3 on each of 16 categories outlined on p13-is that the drill?
|
|
By:
Yes, Rock, thx for your offer. I'll post the details again:
Guidelines for setting Qs 1. Players are asked to provide three Qs on each of the 16 categories, ie 48 Qs in total, by Monday, December 28 (extended from Dec 14). All three Qs for each category should be different, eg. on Sport, players should provide one Q each on, say, Boxing, Cricket and Football, rather than all three on the same sport. 2. The 16 categories are: ART - Painting / Sculpture / Photography / Pottery etc. FILMS & CINEMA FOOD & DRINK GEOGRAPHY HISTORY LITERATURE MUSIC - Classical / Opera / Musicals / Jazz etc. NATURAL WORLD PEOPLE & PLACES POLITICS & CURRENT AFFAIRS POP MUSIC POT LUCK RELIGION & MYTHOLOGY SCIENCE SPORT TELEVISION 3. Avoid the following: (i) FFF Qs, which are a test of typing speed/connection rather than knowledge. Qs should be testing and not too easy. (ii) Vague Qs such as, 'Where was X born?'. Replace with 'In which city....?' or 'In which country...?'. (iii) Qs with fewer choices than a multi, eg. 'In which province of Ireland.....?'. Obviously only four choices. (iv) Qs requring multiple answers, eg. 'Name the seven dwarfs'. Long-winded and dull. Answers requiring 1-3 words are far preferable. (v) Qs beginning with 'Why...?' or 'How....?' as it is unclear how long answers need to be be. 4. Use (or omit) clues to make Qs easier/more difficult. Eg. a Literature Q: Q. Which author created the character Roderick Alleyn? (Difficult) ...becomes... Q. Which New Zealand author created the quintessentially English detective, Roderick Alleyn, who featured in 32 of her novels? (Easier) Three extra clues in that one, so even if players have never heard of Roderick Alleyn, they might know that Ngaio Marsh is a female Kiwi author who writes detective novels. 5. Qs should be labelled Q1, Q3 and Q5, with Q3 being multiple choice (6 options, A-F). Here's an example of what the Qs for the History category should look like (note the different eras and countries referred to): HISTORY Q1. Which historical figure did Fanya Kaplan try to assassinate in Aug 1918? Answer: (Vladimir Ilyich) Lenin Q3. Which French duchy was created in 911 by the Treaty of Saint-Clair-sur-Epte and granted to the Viking leader Rollo? (a) Aquitaine (b) Bourgogne (c) Bourbon (d) Normandy (e) Orleans (f) Valois Answer: (d) Normandy NB. Multi options should be listed in alpahbetical order. Q5. The military power of which religious order was broken by its defeat to a Polish-Lithuanian army at the Battle of Grunwald of 1410? Answer: The Teutonic Knights 6. Qs should be original, not copied from websites (unreliable) or books (soon out of date). Using these sources we also see the same old Qs cropping up repeatedly in quizzes. Wikipedia is obviously a useful source of Qs but info from it should be checked using other websites. 7. Please check your Qs before submitting them and pay attention to spelling and punctuation. 8. Qs should be submitted as follows: SEASON 2010 PREMIERSHIP QUIZZERS: Qs to be sent to jake2130@lycos.com SEASON 2010 CHAMPIONSHIP QUIZZERS: Qs to be sent to lozzyquiz@googlemail.com SEASON 2010 COLA LEAGUE QUIZZERS: Qs to be sent to manofmanymoods@hótmail.com |

Ok-no probs. 28th deadline? Imagine I will have em done well b4 that
|
|
By:
Thanks Rock , yes same format... and the FA Cup deadline will be 5 weeks into the League season so eariiest is mid- Feb (ish)?....
|
|
By:
hope that assists .. ...enjoy your Christmas :-)
|
|
By:
If we have a strange number - eg 35 for instance by 28th, we will invite new quizzers to apply for the last spot.
Ideally what we want is an even number divisible by 3 such as 36, 42, 48 etc |
|
By:
Or a number divisible by 6 :)
|
|
By:
It would be disappointing if we couldn't get at least 42 and have 3x leagues of 14.
We had 56 quizzers last season and we were only envisaging a handful of drop outs as a result of this question setting - it is only a few hours work after all - so we were planning on the idea of 48 quizzers (ie 3 leagues of 16). Unfortunately it looks like it is gonna be a lot less though. |
|

It's a shame, but on the plus side it'll mean less games to watch, cuz I'll want to see how people fared with my questions, it's hard to gauge how tough they are as I didn't know the answers to many of them.. tried to make them tough as they're supposed to be home questions

Due to a pc error this end ... I have only just found an E Mail I was asked to post up here ...by DK1986 regarding his Not joining us for next season... (my apols to DK for the delay) and I post it now in full as he wrote it :-
---------------------------------------------------------------- JJ you can paste the following onto the Quiz Announcements thread please. I can assure everyone, and especially the Quiz Team, that the "rigours" of league quizzing never came into question when I made my decision. I don't like boring people with details, but here they are anyway: It started in Jan 2008 when I got broadband and a laptop (before that I was sharing the family PC on dial-up so was barely about). It became too easy to sit on the forum all day, what with the variety and volume of posts across all the forums. Despite what people may say there's a great deal of funny, clever, interesting and nice people on the forum - to enough of a degree that you become genuinely interested in reading their thoughts. Before I knew it, I'd wake up and the first thing I'd think of was going on the forum. It sometimes felt, in many ways, that I was coming to school everyday and seeing the same names and faces, and having the same old laughs. It became that routine! It dawned on me in summer of this year that all the time spent on the forum was draining me as a person; passions, general interests and genuine care for the people I really know weren't what they once were. I told myself I'd soon cut down on being on the forum a lot, but as ever kept logging in to read the musings of people, and taking part in quizzes (which by the way I don't regret !). I've just had the last calendar week off work, and spent about 8 hours each day logged into the forum, going to bed around 2am each time. That was the stint I needed to give me the kick up the backside to pull myself away from the place. Until now I never thought I could become addicted to anything, so thank God I discovered I could with something harmless. This may sound weird, but when it emerged I could no longer read or post on the forum I immediately felt emancipated. Just reading those last two paragraphs has reminded me slightly of frasier's classic post! The sad thing is, I'm not joking. I'll definitely miss exchanging dialogue with a lot of forumites, but the decision was right. As I write this I expect I'll look back in around June for the 2010 World Cup, but definitely not before. Could tobermory please ensure Michael Ballack's diary is given the odd bump so it doesn't disappear! ;-) :D Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to all. Thanks. DK1986 |

Question setting is educational and it is great fun seeing your questions test the greatest GK minds on the forum. It's disappointing that some aren't even prepared to give it a go just once, even for just 48 questions.

9 days til the deadline

pick up any newspaper (perhaps not the Sun) ,
and you will get 6x good questions .. From current affairs, to history, to art related, to sport , to Geography . do that for 8 days --you are sorted ..(48).. it REALLY is as easy as that .. if you do half that way + research 24 , its still a doddle .. |
|

It is a bit tricky to get the level of difficulty right on subjects you know little about (art, history, classical music etc for me). But if you inadvertently make a v.easy art question, or an impossibly hard classical music one then so be it. There will always be an element of luck of the draw in these quizzes - if you get a "gimme" on your specialis subject then good luck to you imo.
I've learned a tremendous amount from setting various questions (and taking part in quizzes) - I quite enjoy it. |
|
By:
one of the things that put me off was one must be medium, and one must be hard
my definition of medium is probably everyones easy and hard for me would also be easy for everyone else, doing the questions to only have them rejected and have to be redone would have been a huge possibility for me |
|

What specifically have you learned 4th street ;) ?
ps did you do the telegraph yesterday... The back page was tough and the toughie was im-feckin-possible!! |

The Qs we receive are, of course, checked and edited to ensure they reach the required standards of accuracy, difficulty, clarity, etc.
The crucial thing is that players submit Qs that have been well researched and are known to be correct. Some of the Qs may need rephrasing or altering to make them easier/more difficult but this is just a minor addition to the original work. In this way all the Qs we receive can be used in one way or another, though not always in the original form they were submitted. This editing process also avoids our asking players to redo any Qs, which is something none of us wants. |

Players understand that we cannot just keep waiting around for other players indefinetly to answer.
Whether it be 6,8,10 or 12 Players not answered , they will be taken as a NO answer on the 29th Dec. and we will move with the 30 or 40 Players we have . |

Poppydog. 17 Dec 13:17
I've just had a quick flick through the last pages. The length of the thread is off-putting to trawl through. Would like to play, but it's the busiest few weeks of the year, for non-Betfair activities. Barely at the computer, never mind Betfair, (....never mind the Forum, never mind Chit-Chat, never mind Quizzing) A week into the New Year, no doubt, I'll be sat here twiddling my thumbs, but the deadline will have passed by then ------------------------------------- We know it's busy this time of the year. This is why we announced all this a month ago and set the original deadline for over three weeks later, ie Dec 14. That was more than enough time to get the Qs done - and out the way before for the festive period. |

surely it is still going to be a massive job for you three to check every question? I would have thought it would be easier to just accept them. And then only check them if there is a "stewards" raised during the actual quiz.
Might seem a little unprofessional, but would save you three hours and hours. |

there are 6 in Admin Team , and they had far more work last Season ,but thanx for your trying to assist in showing the pitfalls PSV .... :-)
