The original Seekers had just disbanded and even at 15/16 I KNEW it was a special decade.
I didn't know that nothing since has come remotely close or that "my" London and England was to change completely.

Hear hear look at Old Smoke now.......the politicians try to hoodwink us claiming to be the greatest cosmopolitan city in the world??? It's a mess and an utter rat race

Just people of different Races and Cultures "tolerating" each other, providing they don't interfere with their daily life.
Most "Londoners" now would only help "their own" if there was a street problem where years ago you knew that nearly everyone around would help you out.

Should have known that this thread was just another excuse for the usual suspects to whinge about race. Given that that subject accounts for at least 95% of his postings on here, who really could have thought otherwise.
I like this quote though as it sums up nicely the experience that a lot of old people go through.
The fragility of ones existence starts to creep into ones thoughts....
Can't handle that things aren't the same as their youth and become increasingly aware that they are physically (and possibly metally) frail, unlike in their youth and become terrrified of anything that looks a bit different to how they recognised it.
Dare I say it, possibly also developing a frightening obsession with it and spamming forums constantly with ramblings on the subject - in some cases anyway.
No doubt this will be met with a roll call of problems caused by**bags who are immigrants. Hardly the point though, is it. No-one claims that certain aspects of immigration don't bring problems and could and should have been dealt with differently.
I'm referring to the terror of aging and how it turns people who might have been normal in their youth into gibbering, obsessed lunatics.

Live Forever it would be a pleasant change to actually engage you in conversation.
For the record I return to the heart of London, nearly, every week. One day Hampstead, then Camden, then Kensington, then Peckham/Brixton then Docklands, then Notting Hill etc...one can not possibly see all that London offers in one lifetime.
CONTRARY to what you might think I DO see people regularly getting along perfectly well with their lives, in general, almost EVERY time I visit.
I have seen little street crime happen in 55 years of living in Inner London ( 28 years or on the very edge 27 years)...
But.....the proof that the old era was better is NOT mythical.
The Council Rent Man COULD walkaround with ( the equivalent of) thousands of pounds with no problems then.
The newspaper vendor in my marker just left his papers there in a pile and left a box for guys to put their money in( He did this for 15 years so could not have had many problems) People DID queue, religiously, at Bus Stops and if someone was in a public call box we WEREconscious of the next person and cut short our calls.
NONE of these could happen today.
My friends Father drove andwould give complete strangers a lift if he saw them at a bus stop and they were going his way ( he died last year).
Can you really imagine that now?

Yes I'm aware that I'm 55 HOWEVER the Lady I live with is 31 as is the Girl I've seen for 14 years nearly every week as was another Lady who I only stopped seeing this June after 13/14 years and another Ladyfriend is 30 years old who I see most weeks.
I still play Sports regularly and can beat most Guys at Tennis who are only 30 so I'm perfectly fit and well.
Also being an On-Course Bookmaker keeps one mentally active so don't worry about me "just" yet......doesn't stop me noticing the "comparitive" lack of civility and intolreance now though.
Great example on Tuesday night when I stayed the night with the 31-year-old. On my way down The Old Kent Road, I stoppedat lights and I pulled away after1/2 SECONDs and yet The Black Guy behind felt the need to hoot at me! So a simple situation became a Drama and I deliberately let him pass and tailed him. As soon as he momentarily hesitated at he lights later on, I gave him a similar blast as if to say "feck you"..all over NOTHING....

I drove another car, last week, worth nothing and on returning at 3.00AM from the same Lady's place a Motorist went stright up my rear while I stayed at the Red lights at Peckham. He did not even see them. He got out, obviously at fault as the lights were Red. I went to get out and thought "Its Peckham at 3.00AM-No Thanks"..that can't be right but I was taking no chances..

Drivers DO deliberately bump into others late at night when few are around to get them to get out of their car to rob them.
Did you not know that?

Been quite a few done since the stupid tw@ts at the Gambling Commission put names and addresses on the net. It was only on there two weeks but a lot of addresses must have been noted.
Barry Johnson has been done three times. The last time they got him he was on his way TO the races, just left his house, at 8-10 a.m. threatened him and his wife with with an axe and a baseball bat.

We can and should never forget how great our country once was, I can only remember the 70s but front doors could be left unlocked, bikes left outside overnight.

We need more plain tea biscuits. The richer destroyed our will to succeed. We need poverty and abstinence. I've checked with all the priests in the UK and they're happy to abstain. What can stop us now?

It's no good at all looking back to 'the good old days' as some halcyon time, which, in reality, they never were.
It's one's youth most mourn.
Start living for today and enjoy your life as it is - or what you can make of it.

I remember that very well, except that one of my school friends parents did lock the door but hung the key, outside on a hook, on the door frame!
**ers you say but, you have to remember that, most people had nothing worth taking back then.

i can go along with most things that have been brought up on this thread and must agree with spirit about his views on latter day london as opposed to the london he knew as a child, his reasoning is spot on especially about the red light incident, his mindset would never have thought of that situation 30/40 yrs back but it just kicks in ,in this day and age. i also think emphatically that his thought dont have the slightest racial element about them , he is just saying it how it is. spirit i went through the getting old phase a few years back , waking up of a morning and feeling sorry for myself , i hated getting old, but i have quickly come to terms with it and got myself back on track. anyhow reading about you lifestyle you dont seem to be having a bad carry on live life to the full and go for it happy new year to you PS keep your eyes peeled at red lights though you got that bit bang right
