There was a big discussion for the millenium of how AD 1 being the first year (there is/was no zero) meant that AD 2000 was the last year of a millenium. That being the case, the decade ends in the xxx0 year (2010) and starts in the xxx1 year.

It's all a bit moot anyway, imo as there was no "AD 1" either in all probability and it is widely believed that we're out by seven years anyway meaning that it's 2003. Anyone care? :D

"it's the '10s..."
which means its still the first decade
Report Lies, DamnLies, and Statistics • January 1, 2010 9:33 AM GMT
no, the first decade was the 'noughties', just like the 10th decade of last century was the 90s...

We should have a "brainstorm" and conjure up a name for this decade....

Cool - if it's 2003, that means I'm 37 again!

This decade is the teenies, shirly.

We are clearly entering the last year of the first decade of this millenium.

Anyone who thinks otherwise clearly has not got a basic grasp of mathematics.

Which would explain a lot actually.

i have more than a basic grasp of mathematics, and completely understand your point....however, i was not alive in 1AD, so really it makes no difference to me that this is the START of the 2010th year, not the end of it

but the fact remains we have been referring to decades as the 50s, 60s etc since before all of us were alive...and it is generally accepted by now that the 60s were a decade....and as their name suggests, they went from jan 1 1960 to dec 31 1969

your AMAZING grasp of mathematics to which we mere mortals can only aspire does not change basic facts such as these...

Its like 1st goal odd....

1-10
11-20...etc

Still a year to go
Report panglima • January 1, 2010 10:50 AM GMT
like first goal odds then you say still a year to go !

if a goal is scored on 10 min 1 sec its called the 11th minute

hence its 2010 & a few hours so you are totally contradicting yourself.

btw shall we say the great brazilian team of the 1970 world cup were the team of the 60's !!
Report jedi-punkster • January 1, 2010 10:55 AM GMT
I apologise for my Mathematical mistake
. And I am sure the great Brazilian Side of 1970 were pretty good in 69 too

I CAN'T BELIEVE THIS IS VEN A QUESTION!!

THERE WAS NO YEAR ZERO
IT IS THAT SIMPLE
Report Barney The Bot Slayer • January 1, 2010 11:34 AM GMT
lies

a decade begins and finish every milli second, so the only one that is import is the groups of 10 years.
now if this is the end of the decade , we have a very very deprived decade very early on .

the 9 year decade between 1/1/01 and 31/12/09

the fact that 99% of people are wrong, will never make them right.

Numbers don't make things right , only facts

have heard this argument since 2000 millennium stuff barney, and you aren't gonna convince me now...

good try though

i dont think the majority of the population could cope with the concept of 1990 being part of the 80s
