Originally from the Black Country myself and totally disagree with this! There are some bad parts and has gone downhill a bit recently but there is a lot going for Wolves.

Very rich history, Premier League football team (worlds greatest team in 50s), salt of the earth people. Think there are many worse cities in the UK let alone the world. Anyone agree / disagree? What's your worst city in the world?

worlds greatest team in the 50s. Did I hear that right?

Read the following from Wikipedia:

In this period, football played under floodlights was still a novelty, and the summer of 1953 saw the first set of lights installed at Molineux, which were first tested in a friendly game against a South African XI. Over the next months, Wolves played a series of famous "floodlit friendlies" against foreign opposition, and the "sheer theatre" of the football enthused many, such as the young Wolves fan George Best.[4] Beginning with Racing Club of Argentina, they also played Spartak Moscow of the USSR, before meeting Honvéd of Hungary in a landmark game for English football, televised live on the BBC. Faith in the English national team was at an all time low, and Wolves faced a Honvéd team that including many of the "Magical Magyars" team who had recently so humbled England twice, and had been 1954 World Cup finalists. In front of the watching nation, Wolves came from two goals down at half time to beat the Hungarian side 3-2, which coupled with their previous European exploits, lead the national media to proclaim Wolves "Champions of the World".

Wolverhampton - Fifth worst city in world?

True...boing,boing. :)
Report positively4thsteet • December 31, 2009 12:31 PM GMT
I just read that too. doesn't make wolves the best team in the world in the 50s imo. And I don't suppose you believe it either.

Fair play to wolves though, a team i've always liked, and I think brummies and the black country people are under exposed in the natonal consciousness. Nice people from my experience but you just don't see them as much as they should - Birmingham is the second largest city inthe country afterall.

Worst city in the world? Birmingham. The accent makes me nauseous.

Alice Springs in Aus is horrible for reasons I cant quite articulate. And obviously absolutley obscenely hot for a lot of the time.

My fave city after visiting it this year is now Berlin. Great place.

Spent many a night on the beer/watching bands in Wolves, nice place but you do get some dregs hanging around The moon under the water pub at times.

It makes me laugh when fans of clubs like Wolves, Middlesbrough and Portsmouth come to Goodison and start singing about how shít the city of Liverpool is.

I could take it from Fiorentina or Barcelona supporters, but Wolves?!

I travel the length and breadth every week due to my job.

Best places IMHO

1. North East, Nice places to visit, great night life, above all fantastic people ;-)

2. Manchester, as above but sadly no sea in the summer, nice folk though the mancs.

3. Wolverhampton, my hometown, bit biased maybe, but the nightlife is second to none, nice people, some bad areas just like anywhere else, on the whole a worthy 3rd place.

4. Bristol, nice place too.

Anywhere south of Birmingham to the east, sadly all stuck up there own a r s e s i'm afraid. Londonistan, horrid place, horrid people.

Take a drive up the A19 some day and head towards the coastline from sunderland up, beautifull part of the country and worthy of the best place in Britain award anyday ;-)

The further south the better, for me.
With the exception of London. Wolves is OK, there are certainly worse places all over the UK.
Luton, Wisbech, any welsh town/city, many n.west towns, many towns in Yorkshire, etc etc.

My ex girlfriend was from Tahiti. She moved from Paris to Birmingham and insists Birmingham is a far better city than Paris.

Wolverhampton on world's worst list

The list, topped by the US city of Detroit and based on traveller feedback, saw the West Midlands city deemed to be less attractive than the capital of El Salvador, as well as other "hated" cities in India, Tanzania and Mexico.

Wolverhampton was placed fifth on a revised Lonely Planet list of nine most hated cities following "swift and fierce" reaction to an initial request for travellers' least favourite destinations.

On its website, Lonely Planet gave reasons for the selection of the cities other than Wolverhampton, describing Seoul in South Korea as having no heart or spirit.

But Wolverhampton, which can trace its history back to 985 AD, was described as being "so bad that we don't even have it on this site!"

In a statement, the leader of Wolverhampton City Council, Neville Patten, said it was "quite obvious" that representatives of the respected travel guide publisher had failed to visit the city.

Mr Patten said: "The picture they paint of Wolverhampton is not an accurate one.

"If they had come here, they would have seen that Wolverhampton is one of the most progressive cities in Britain. Wolverhampton is such a friendly, open place which is why so many people want to come and live and work here.

"We have first class facilities for residents and visitors and this is certainly not a downtrodden or Third World city.

"I would like to invite Lonely Planet to actually come here and take a tour so they can see for themselves what a vibrant place it is."

Can I suggest London to start with. It's got some nice buildings in the centre but then you've said it all.
I truly cant imagine why anyone would want to live there.
