I wanna know this too, as just about to get a new tv.

I would think LCD because there prices seem a bit higher
Report columbo007 • December 30, 2009 8:38 PM GMT
LCD mate, will last longer than plasma.
Report ReaseHeath • December 30, 2009 8:38 PM GMT
Have one of each - both 42" both 2 years old - LCD is better.
Report Andy Murray • December 30, 2009 8:39 PM GMT
She was looking at plasmas, I said to here I'm pretty sure LCD is the one you want
(only because LCD was split into subcategories and plasma was just 1 single category)
is there much of a difference?
Report Reyes • December 30, 2009 8:39 PM GMT
plasma (if over 37")

although lcd getting better all the time. the new OLED tellys are SOOO thin if you fancy one of them
Report Andy Murray • December 30, 2009 8:40 PM GMT
she's probably going for 36-42"
Report delz • December 30, 2009 8:40 PM GMT

andy

hate when ppl answering without asking more questions.

it depends on the screeen size you are after!!
Report ReaseHeath • December 30, 2009 8:42 PM GMT
my plasma has screenburn even though when I did research I was led to believe problem had been eliminated.

They might have solved it now but it's disconcerting to see imprint of a league table from SSN when watching Bang Babes (or Eastenders in your mum's case).
Report yorky • December 30, 2009 8:42 PM GMT
plasma costs fortune on leccy
Report 8sid • December 30, 2009 8:45 PM GMT
anything from 32" or smaller is lcd, plasma for bigger

the deep black are no longer are prob on either which is great

my sexy kit cost me 1700 for 32"

but chuffed as it had the superior sound as well, however i put everything through the amp anyway.

a mate purchased a cracking plasma, 50" panasonic that is super dooper cheap on special purchase!!

check it out!!

Report A1 Bionic • December 30, 2009 9:38 PM GMT
I have a 43" plasma and couldnt be happier with it
Report GOSS4 IN A JAG • December 30, 2009 9:52 PM GMT
quite simple.look at both the one you think is the better picture,
buy it.bingo!!
Report Poppydog. • December 30, 2009 10:00 PM GMT
This question is always asked and is largely irrelevant
Most people are going from experience of what they have (and have seen)

Moore's Law makes all this hogwash and poppycock

If one was better than the other, the question would have died (Betamax) a few years ago.
Report Poppydog. • December 30, 2009 10:01 PM GMT
Goss4 is correct.
Go look. Get what you like.
Report 718 • December 30, 2009 10:01 PM GMT
Went through all of this 6 months ago

PLasma is better for fast moving images e.g. football I was told, but like someone said, look at the picture before buying

As for longevity, the TV will become obsolete before either should pack in
Report kenvil • December 30, 2009 10:12 PM GMT
took delivery of a 55" led yesterday, spent most of the day trying to get it on the wall !!

Picture absolutely stunning with sky hd/blu ray and looks even better with the xbox, couldnt be happier with it, although doesnt come cheap !

Everybody's requirements are different. You need to find out what her priorities are. There are dozens of different models to choose from. They are ALL different.
For detailed test and comparison results you could try www.trustedreviews.com
Take the time to read the FULL REVIEW sections in detail, This will help yopu better understand the pros and cons of LCD versus Plasma, as well as giving detailed analysis of external connections, sound and picture performance. and running costs etc.
Take your time to form a short list before auditioning. You will also be made more aware of the sales tricks.
Simple answers like 'LCD is best' or 'you can't go wrong with Panasonic' are just sweeping generalisations. Find out which SPECICFIC models fulfil your (or her) criteria.
Good luck!

4 yrs ago bought top range 42" plasma - sony - lovely tv

3 months ago- it bust - needed new 'motherboard' or something - but sony no longer supported the model- think they were on ther backfoot coz they replaced with a 46" bravia for free

i cant tell the difference - love the new tv- tho i must say the old one - which cost £2400 - looked good

so- buy the cheapest and get a bigger screen imo
Report Jim Hensen • December 30, 2009 10:31 PM GMT
If you buy from a decent shop, like John Lewis or your local Euronics shop, they will usually let you try at home and swap and change until your happy. If it means so much to get it right then this seems like a worthwhile effort.
Report lmfao • December 30, 2009 10:33 PM GMT
your mother is probably old (ish) and wont know the difference- buy biggest screen at tescos and leave it at that imo
Report naydam • December 30, 2009 10:51 PM GMT
Surely, an older person would set higher standards than the younger 'bling' brigade.
Certainly, THIS one does!
Report Jimbo747 • December 30, 2009 11:27 PM GMT
2/3 years ago, plasma were better. Nowadays theres little if any difference between a £1000 plasma or LCD at same dimensions. And for the person who said 'led', you've been had.

OLED tvs are out, but you'll need very deep pockets, about £400 / inch.
