Once at the camps, from October 1939 to February 1940, the Poles were subjected to lengthy interrogations and constant political agitation by NKVD officers such as Vasily Zarubin. The Poles were encouraged to believe they would be released, but the interviews were in effect a selection process to determine who would live and who would die.
According to NKVD reports, if the prisoners could not be induced to adopt a pro-Soviet attitude, they were declared "hardened and uncompromising enemies of Soviet authority."

On 5 March, 1940, pursuant to a note to Stalin from Beria, the members of the Soviet Politburo

After 3 April, 1940, at least 22,436 POWs and prisoners were executed: 15,131 POWs (most or all of them from the three camps) and at least 7,305 prisoners in western parts of Belarus and Ukraine. A 1956 memo from KGB chief Alexander Shelepin to First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev contains incomplete information about the personal files of 21,857 murdered POWs and prisoners.

Also among the dead were 20 university professors (including Stefan Kaczmarz); 300 physicians; several hundred lawyers, engineers, and teachers; and more than 100 writers and journalists as well as about 200 pilots. In all, the NKVD executed almost half the Polish officer corps.

Having visited 1 of the only 3 communist states last year( Not Cuba or North Korea the other one) it is not a pretty site. The have nots have nothing the haves , have got everything and more. The heating was even ruled by the government unless you could afford your own heating. The radiators come on at 5pm(the temp in the daytime gets down to - 10 to -15 and -15 to -20 at night in the winter) and even then they are barely warm, the hot water is a joke. I twould be warmer to p iss yourself than rely on he water from the taps. Luckily since June they have voted out the communists and elected a pro western government. Things haven't changed yet but they might. I met a 67 year old women working in a museum to earn a little extra money as her government pension was less than £3 a month. Prices of most items are more expensive than in the UK . Most elderly people rely on money from family working abroad or as i saw begging ( this women was well over 70 and the temp was freezing). When i was there in the summer saw a women who charged 1 of the local currency ( 15 to the £) for using her bathroom scales this was in the main street in the capital.Do you think you would see the same on Oxford Street. Be careful what you wish for. Can you guess the country.

The only problem with wanting a non-mentalist communist state is that you have to be mental to think it would work in the first place.

It may be a lovely idea as a theory but when you factor in human greed it has not, can not and will never work ever.
