mansfieldtoon 23 Dec 17:48 So a Nurse would be less valuable to society than a prem footballer or a banker?
Cant have that sorry

1) I am not necssarily advocating the view in the OP.
2) Our society confers these respective wages and so can be seen, in some sense at least, as the society's judgement of the recipients' value.

More a reflection on our sad society than the relative contributions...
Joey Barton has more in the bank than any nurse or police officer...
Thus endeth the thread

one problem is how to balance the value of careers such as life-saving (nurses, etc) versus the value provided by entertainers (sportmen, pop stars, etc) who make life more fun and interesting...

Sir Denis Eton-Hogg 23 Dec 18:01 yes i agree, joey barton and simon cowell make my life a lot more fun and interesting
you may not but many others presumably do or they wouldn't be able to command the salaries/generate the income that they do...

Let's take the example of the world's richest man, Bill Gates. His Microsoft software (Windows, etc) has made computers usable to hundreds of millions of people worldwide and his bank balance reflects the benefits they have received.

Joey Barton and Simon Cowell are paid much more than nurses because they possess skills that do not diminish when they are used by additional people. 50,000 are able to gain as much enjoyment from their abilities as 50, without the original 50 losing any of their own enjoyment. Therefore it's possible to rake in what 50,000 people will pay. A nurse can only effectively treat one patient at a time, and can only supervise perhaps only 10 safely.

I was speaking in general terms, Slarty. I won't get dragged into what effect Bill Gates' wealth has on society (or Microsoft's effect for that matter) but it is perhaps not as unalloyed as you suggest.

I would have thought that what I wrote about Gates/Microsoft was fact rather than opinion, O. Personally, I've benefited from several pieces of MS software and have always had a free choice whether to buy it or not.

If you were to compare in this way you would need to compare life earnings. A footballer has a career of say 15 years on average, and no pension (other than what he saves). A nurse on the other hand works for 40 ish years and gets a pension as part of the deal.
Even then, this is still not a true comparable. Earnings are related to the difficulty of the job as well as the relative market for it. Plumbers are not rich becuase plumbing is difficult it is more to do with supply demand and necessity. Likewise a dentist can hardly fail to earn good money due to supply, demand and necessity.
Imo your contribution to society is positive if you create wealth, manage wealth, create benefits to society in general or provide benefial services that are a necessity.
I recall a thread on here similar that stated that salespeople provided no benefit to society. The salespeople defended tere corner by saying that without them the economy would not function. Completely oblivious to what was driving the economy at the time, and I assume they must be out there saving the world as we speak lol. The term oily rag springs to mind!

I was meaning creating wealth overall, not personal wealth. for example a tax clerk does not create wealth but does an essential service, (albeit badly).
And I agree that a persons wealth is not a measure of his self worth.
