over the last 3-4 weeks i have been receiving a phone call late at night.
the first one started at about 11:30pm and the last one i receieved was about 3:30am. they have not been every night, there is often a gap of 2-3 days.
if i answer it or the answer machine kicks in, the line just goes dead.

the number is always witheld.

Mrs gog spoke to BT, they told her to be able to trace the cal the police would need to get involved.
i would sooner explore other avenues first.

any advice please?

Change your number. The police won't do nothing about it either way.

Report CJ • December 22, 2009 9:05 AM GMT
Unplug the phone from the wall for a period.
Report Crisp77 • December 22, 2009 9:06 AM GMT
Ring BT and ask them to make your number premium rate...nice little earner.
Report The Hand Of GOG • December 22, 2009 9:09 AM GMT
we dont have virgin tv/broadband

changing the number seems like a lot of hassle, and if it is someone we know, they could get hold of the new number!
Report The Hand Of GOG • December 22, 2009 9:10 AM GMT
cj

was thinking of doing that, but whoever is calling wouldn't know it was unplugged and it may not stop them.
Report Crisp77 • December 22, 2009 9:10 AM GMT
Yes but if the new number is premium rate you get at least a quid for every call...making money while you sleep :-)
Report Big Charlie • December 22, 2009 9:11 AM GMT
Get a new phone number but only give it to half a dozen people to narrow down the field. If it happens again, try to keep them talking while you ring the six numbers on your mobile. If that fails, ring them one by one at 3-00 a.m. but with-hold your number. See if anybody tells you about it.

i did notice a BT van in our road a few weeks ago, so there could be some kind of fault, its just started happening out of the blue and is very frustrating, lets hope it just stops... and soon!
Report Joe Jordan • December 22, 2009 9:30 AM GMT
Virgin admitted when a new line goes in their Computer sends out "testing line" signals to ensure the service is okay .
Old people complained , and amid cries of Harrasment ... they then said "Oh it was actually a computer fault and it should not be happening ".
Ask Your supplier can they end Silent Calls to your number .
Many Sales companies used to use a machine that dials say 8 numbers simultaneously , first caller answers the sales rep takes the call , they are supposed to cancel the machines 7 other diallings , but they are often too busy trying to sell to the one whpo DID answer , as they are under pressure to hot targets , so they leave the others dialling in the hope that if this Answerer tells them to Foxtrot Oscar , another answers and they can slip straight over ..But this is supposed to be Days + Evenings not Late night ...,
BUT foreign countries (eg:- USA) ring UK early hours as their Sales Staff are in work ..
We kept getting kfin USA "Time shares in Florida" ringing here !!!!

Believe it or not, I used this a few years ago and it worked.

I was receiving calls through the night, random times, same thing.

Phone company said police need to be involved.

Police said phone company.

so......

I contacted my councils environmental department with a.....Noise complaint.

The phone exceeds the limit (40 db, I believe).

I sent a letter to the phone company saying unless it was resolved, the council would take action.

It stopped two days after I sent them the letter.

:)

we thought it may be a USA company as it just seems so random, its just a pain in the neck!

don't know if this has been said already but you can have callers than withold their number barred from calling you.

Tel, somebody said changing your number costs £25. I don't thump people that cheap. You do know there's a recession on and times are hard.

Merry xmas to you , the mrs and the half a quids.

Has Harry took up boxing yet ? :)
Report johnizere • December 22, 2009 10:05 AM GMT
Barring withheld numbers isn't a great solution. If you are waiting on a return call from a GP or the council or police telephone you, you will have barred those numbers too, as all those services use number withheld. There will be other private and public services who will withold their number too, and you may miss a valuble call.
Wonder why GPs, Council, Police, Government, etc. withold their number?? Perhaps it has something to do with you not finding out their real number so you can bypass their 0870/0845/0844 number !!
Report everythings gone green • December 22, 2009 10:13 AM GMT
You can get BT to bar all incoming withheld numbers.

Bloke at work did it.

I'm gonna read the thread properly next time.

thanks all for your advice

it was actually mrs gog who was replying earlier as i was out.

BigCharlie

all the best to you and yours, all well here apart from the nuisance calls. although they dont worry me as much as mrs gog.
i need to get more meat on Harry before he takes up the noble art, he would struggle to make flyweight at the moment!

Tried the telephone preference service?

One other thing that springs to mind is True Call, a gadget on Dragons Den but its pricey.

I had almost exactly the same thing HOG! The only difference was my answering machine never kicked in. For some reason this witheld number would ring and ring and ring . . . . .

It only happened about twice a month with me but if I answered it, the time would tick up as if somebody was there (when the clearly wasnt).

I phoned BT and asked them to look into it for me. They told me it was likely to be a sales firm. Apparently they ring about ten number at a time and the first to answer hears the sales message whilst the remaining nine just hear a dead line. They changed my number in a matter of minutes.

HTH
