It snowed here in Warrington,Cheshire yesterday morning. It wasn't unexpected,as it had been on all the weather forecasts and on several websites that I frequent. It all froze over last night and left the side roads treacherous and the main routes mainly clear of lying snow(due to the volume of traffic)but full of frozen ruts in the lightly used areas. I've just finished talking to someone from Warrington Borough Council. This is how it went: Me "Hello,I'm calling to ask why their were no gritters out yesterday or even today, leaving the roads in a dangerous condition?" WBC " I can't put you through to that particular dept, but I will pass on your concerns" Me "And that's it?" WBC "We always aim to grit as many roads as possible during this type of weather Sir and I shall pass your concerns on" Me "Everyone in the country knew about this weather apart from WBC" WBC "I shall pass on etc etc etc.
I've no doubt that the £130,000 a year head of gritting won't be answerable for anything after this debacle. It's like a third world country.
my missus just went to the local council offices. she told the woman on reception it was quite icy on the steps outside. the woman agreed and said we have been told not to clear the ice in case somebody slips and claims that it was due to the council clearing the ice????????wtf is that all about?

It's the same everywhere I drove to Oxford from Stratford this morning and not one road was gritted across 2 counties there was a massive crash along the route cars on fire ambulances etc unbelievable all because of no road salt.

I think that's actually the motto that Warrington Borough Council use on all official documents.

This morning, whilst out Christmas shopping, I was fined £50 for dropping a cigarette butt on the floor. Two people out patrolling (I was informed there are eight altogether) on behalf of Cherwell District Council which is apparently one of two councils in the UK that do this ( Stratford being the other). Living in Spain, I was unaware of this new money grabbing opportunism by this local council and no signage to be seen anywhere. Meanwhile on the other side of the road an elderly woman had slipped over on the pavement and looked to have suffered a pretty bad bump to the head - maybe those two people would be better employed salting the public pathways but I guess they don't get any money for that. Seething!

Couldn't you just organise some of those bins with the cunning hole at the side for putting cigarette ends in, like they have in Spain, or would the UK then have to come up with yet another coloured bin for collecting refuse? Being shot seems a bit harsh - will there be any signs notifying anyone of the situation or will it just be shot on sight?
