jan 1st soon, make it your resolution to knock it on the head. I have seen my father in law and uncle die in extreme pain from a life of heavy smoking

ask yourself

do you get a buzz/kick from a fag?
how much a week is this waste of space costing?
is it cool to go outside in sub zero temperatures to smoke?

give em up. hard at first but you will crack it. good luck

its an addiction...and they dont go away easily....

do you get a buzz/kick from a fag? - YES (wel I did)
how much a week is this waste of space costing? - it was costing £40-50
is it cool to go outside in sub zero temperatures to smoke? - LITERALLY? YES

I gave at the end of Jan this year. Very pleased I did and feel good and richer for it.

However, I am not a smug oppressor and if people want to smoke it's up to them. i am agianst the discrimination that smokers face these days. Smokers are simply a minority that society deems ok to oppress since racism went out of fashion.

One form of intolerance is as bad as another imho.

I would never advise people to start smoking it is without doubt a horrible habit ,I enjoy smoking End Of ,as for the financial side I dont
go to pubs anymore ,or very rarely tell me whos quids in £3 for a pint £4.5 for a short and mixer to sit with a load of miserable**s
not for me:-)
Report King Louis • December 18, 2009 12:07 AM GMT
good luck to those who give up smoking this year, you'll be doing the right thing I promise. My family have suffered horribly, truly horribly because of addiction to cigarettes, including us who are left behind. should be banned full stop.
Report Tommy Toes • December 18, 2009 12:09 AM GMT
Casemoney, I'd never promote smoking either - but I love it and have no intention of ever stopping.

I've been unable (through personal circumstances) to go to pubs for quite a few years until recently, but (just for instance) yesterday I was in town and really fancied celebrating a bit of good news and having a drink.

It was raining and cold.

Did I really want to buy a drink and then go outside in those conditions to have a smoke (which is just 'natural' to a smoker having a pint)?

No.

So I didn't.

Result = landlord's loss of profit.
Report King Louis • December 18, 2009 12:12 AM GMT
what's profit if it saves a loved one's life?
Report casemoney • December 18, 2009 12:14 AM GMT
KL very sorry to hear that ,but their are certain people in life who once started will not stop untill death ,without smoking stress would probably take me out ,the age for smoking should be raised to 21 .
Banning smoking totally would only lead to a blackmarket ,I have
lost so many family friends over the past few years most before their
time ,that im losing count ,most of them were non smokers ..
Report Tommy Toes • December 18, 2009 12:14 AM GMT
King Louis, I'm sorry for your personal circumstances, but there's far more to the 'smoking debate' than there appears to be at the offset.
Report casemoney • December 18, 2009 12:16 AM GMT
TT if u go to the boozer in the summer u get accosted by nutters

You leave smokers alone WIN ONLY smokers are the most selfless people I know they pay for the NHS even though they know they'll never get to use it.
Report King Louis • December 18, 2009 12:20 AM GMT
you don't need to tell me that people will carry on until death mr case, i've seen it first hand too may times. and it's a terrible, truly horrifying death. i get dreadfully upset thinking about what we all went through over and over again even now.
i disagree totally with mr tommy. it's totally black and white the smoking debate. cigarettes are addictive, they bring in billions of pounds to the treasury, they cost billions of pounds to the NHS, and they kill people, robbing husbands of wives and children of mothers every day.

Casemoney, totally agree with your post @1:16

I've had so many people lately wanting me to go out for a drink with them and I keep replying: "NO!", not intentionally, but the thought of spending a shed load of dosh to sit outside in the rain and cold appeals not a jot.
Report redrich • December 18, 2009 12:26 AM GMT
What I'm saying KL is that we can't ban everything. Not saying that smoking is any better.
Report Tommy Toes • December 18, 2009 12:27 AM GMT
King Louis, there are many dreadful, horrifying deaths.
Because of personal circumstances you can't rate one above another and castigate a whole load of people.
It's far more complicated than that.

Tobacco, drink, fast food

all of the above contribute to some tragic deaths

Before you say 'fast food is not addictive' - it is!
Report King Louis • December 18, 2009 12:30 AM GMT
of course you can't ban everything mr redrich I agree, but cigarettes are just awful in the most literal sense of the word. The suffering they cause is so widespread I shouldn't imagine anything else comes close to it in this country.

Report King Louis • December 18, 2009 12:34 AM GMT
of course excessive drinking takes a terrible toll on families too, but this is not really an argument in favour of smoking.
Report redrich • December 18, 2009 12:38 AM GMT
not saying it is KL. We're going in circles. What I'm saying is - is that if you ban it completely, you'd set a precident to ban a lot more things

plus, as prohibition taught us, a law that is not obeyed by the majority is not viable one.

I would never encourage smoking. My parents discouraged me but I stll fell into the trap eventually anyway. Now I've stopped for good but I don't want to tell others how to live their lives.

Where did I castigate a whole load of people? I'm hardly likely to castigate smokers am I. There is NOBODY on here who knows more about the effects smoking has on a family and how hard it is to give up, even when it is plainly killing you and loved ones are begging, crying with someone to give up. And it's not in the leat bit complicated, don't know what you're talking about.
Report King Louis • December 18, 2009 12:40 AM GMT
Mr R. if smoking was banned tomorrow i totally agree with you that many many people would find a way to obtain cigarettes somehow. But many wouldn't, they'd eventually give up.
Report Tommy Toes • December 18, 2009 12:42 AM GMT
Okay, King Louis.
You're obviously someone who has great demons about something that has happened to you personally and can only think of 'banning' that problem (to you) as an ultimate goal.

I have a far different view of such things, but each to their own.
Report King Louis • December 18, 2009 12:42 AM GMT
I will never tire of telling people to give up smoking. I know I am not likely to convince anybody on a forum, but I can and have in person. just one giving up is worth it to me.

I wouldn't be too sure of that. I've been on fora where people in their 20s to 30s detest smoking but are quite happy to admit to snorting or taking illegal drugs.

I've yet to see a mugger arrested and it says in the court papers ' He beat up that od lady for the money to buy a pack of cigarettes'.

As smokers are in a minority, are there more smokers than drinkers who require NHS treatment ?

If the smoker has worked all his life and paid enormous amounts of tax for his habit, why should a non-smoker who pays less tax be treated before him ?

Do indigenous non-smokers like the non-smoking immigrants who have been here 5 minutes and get NHS treatment, despite not paying anything into the system.

I'm going to have a cigar now, you non smokers should wait outside this thread or a while, just like you never went to pubs when smoking was allowed.

Hang on you non-smokers DID go to pubs 'you, AND there were smokers in there.

Yet, despite the danger to your health, and the smell you all moan about, you still went in for your ** of alcohol.

What a sad bunch of alcoholics you non-smokers are.

STAND CLEAR, I''M LIGHTING UP.

Nobody loves me, is it all right if I smoke?

As it happens, I gave it up before I was 20 but only because I didn't think I was quite as fit as I could be. Presumably, now that I'm a non-smoker, I'm going to live forever?
