Man lying in the gutter

I was in Bradford yesterday shopping and I noticed there was a man in the gutter with his head over a manhole. Everyone was ignoring him, but I stopped and said are you ok pal?

He said listen to this pointing to the manhole cover. So I got down on my knees and leaned over to listen. Silence.

I can't hear anything I said. I know he replied, it's been like that all day.
