The guardian did a poll and had the manx cavendish top ffs. He didn't win the tour de france. He didn't even win the points race. Good luck to him, hope he wins the latter next year and gets medals at olympics, but no way should we be rewarding people who come second - which also rules out the scot and the welshman.
Should be one of the 7 english sports persons imo. |

shortening even further !

Ridiculous to knock Cavendish for not winning the green jersey in the tour. It was only down to a harsh disqualification that he didn't. To win 6 stages in one tour is a far greater achievement than anything Giggs has done singularly in the last year or so.

Giggs winning would be like when they eventually gave a nostalgic Oscar to the great Paul Newman for the Colour Of Money, having somehow never won one for the vastly superior Cool Hand Luke, The Hussler, The Sting, Butch & Sundance ext.

Your highness, who would you vote for. I am at a disadvantage in this competition because I am not a man. All the men I have asked said they do not vote, so that is not much use! Do you vote? I am lucky to be all green, but I am still debating whether to change the amounts won by the different contestants.
By:
Jessica Ennis , is a winner , very good looking & has a personality.
She wins this award , which imo should be quietly retired , it has long since had it's day. |
By:
annie. Glad to read you are all green. Sorry, but no I wouldn't vote out of principle - as we have already discussed on here the fact Mr McCoy doesn't even warrant a place in a ten person list says it all! If there is any value left in the market, then maybe it is Ennis - but I am guessing.
By:
I don't mind who wins, so long as it is someone who was a winner this year:
ennis, haye, idowu, tweddle, daley, strauss or button. coincidentally they are all engish |
By:
I was lucky to get green, only Giggs at 40/1 saved me! This was mainly because I backed McCoy on the assumption he may not win but if he got nominated then his odds would go down, like Giggs, because of horse racing support. Who do you want to win, even if you do not vote?
By:
most blokes wouldn't vote. Only time I voted was when they voted for greatest sports person of 20th century. I went for bobby moore yet they gave it to redgrave ffs. no way redgrave should've won it.
I always used to say that it was cr.ap because it is middle england, middle class women who did all the voting (hence zara fkin phillips ffs, though tbf, there weren't many other options that year, and she was world and euro champion). I though calzaghe should'v won it that year, but he had no chance because of the voter demographics. I was proved wrong the next year when calzaghe did win. |

I'd go for Cav on achievement, also got a bit of devil in him and has a personality. Ennis and David Haye also come across fairly well. Giggsy is just a stereotypical footballer talking in cliches, maybe not as bad as the John Terry's of this world but hardly inspiring. I met Button once years ago in a pub, just a Billy big bo11ocks trying to pull as many birds as possible!

Is there anyone on here who does vote on SPOTY? I love betting on it each year but find it a handicap not being a man.
By:
Let's just get one thing straigh. SPOTY is not, and never has been, anything to do with personality, it is about Achievement
By:
spoty is awarded to:
the sportsperson "whose actions have most captured the public's imagination" |
By:
it should be .. yes
but with the low phone votes it's like a cross between the two now Giggs doesn't deserve to win on sporting achievement .. about all of them deserve it more Ii've backed button .. but could be close |
By:
True enough in the past re personality, but do you not think with the change in the voting that someone coming across well on the night when interviewed is obviously going to enhance their chances?
By:
Personally i don't think the public are swayed that easily .. they know who they're likely to vote for & stick to it
By:
just been wikipediang a few things. Guess who was the inaugural winner of the lifetime achievement award for sport in 1996?
By:
Was it Eddie The Eagle?
By:
it was Frank Bruno.
it is on BBC now, philips odowu being touted by a gob**e dj i've never heard of. Thinking of votingfor him now. |
By:
Be interesting to see what sort of coverage giggs gets tonight. Surely should only include footage of him from 2009 ?
By:
..... will ferguson give an interview ? :p
By:
Mr Moonbeam
a few years ago Beth Tweddle who wasn't considered and wasn't well known by the general public did a bars routine on the night and came 3rd at 100-1. the public are swayed by what they see on the screen on the night. |
By:
He's 5/2 now! Is there a telephone conspiracy going on here?!?
By:
he would have had a chance maybe if he had played well yesterday but all hope ended for him to win SPOTY when he was replaced at half time imo

I think I'll lay Giggs at the price. If he wins I will take on the character of an injured, self-righteous punter who has been SHAFTED and wants answers. NOW!!!!
By:
be doing a fairly good impression of that already tbf..
By:
How **king dare you
By:
it's not the votes that count - it's fixed. hence two royal winners.
By:
attitude adjuster
you are keeping a low profile this year ............ I'm surprised you haven't started any threads. Any firm convictions on the first 3 ? |
By:
That's the sort of talk I want to hear. FIXED! Just wait till it starts, I'll be foaming at the mouth
By:
it is fixed. "they" choose the winner, not the votes. anyone betting on this is mental.
I've got some ennis at 16/1 and running that position, and considering laying giggs at the price... |
By:
you might be asking yourself the wrong question.
it's not who 'should' win it, it's who people will vote for. |
By:
the vote is not used in determining the winner
By:
not really c-c
i do think it's hard to take a strong view because the great unknown is the effect the x factor final will have on viewing figures and the knock on effect on the vote. but i think Giggs is still the shout...he has the USP which none of the others have. |
By:
my ahem friend had an even £1000 on the golfer the year Zara Philips won.
Still stinks! |
By:
No point voting, the BBC will choose who they want to win. The whole event is a massive charade, BBC have no interest in sport.
By:
If it was done truly on achievement, Daley would be a 1.01 chance, nothing any of the others have done even come close to what he has at the age of 15!
By:
STS and/or his connections for Overseas SPOTY would be a pleasant surprise, imo.
By:
giggs is 36 and plays for united where they could take their pickings great servant.
