This would be the most utterly ludicrous SPOTY winner of all time. And I wouldn't bet against it.

SuBo has as much chance of winning as StuBro whose Ashes performances were a bit better than hers!

Don't disagree - was merely pointing out the reason for the gamble on Giggs - I'd be surprised if he wins too.

SPOTY is dead if Giggs wins.

Thank God Berlino the Bear will be attending to add some much-needed dignity, gravitas and humility to the occasion.

Giggs is probably embarassed by all this. He hasn't even been any good ffs. Massively over-hyped towards the end of last season and average so far this year. So bad today he was hauled off at ht.

I guess if Giggs is 7/2 for the whole shebang, there is an outside chance that Martina Hingis could win the Overseas SPOTY for her heroic one-round comeback on Strictly Come Dancing.

The Giggs nomination misses the point - it's as if he was nominated for what he's done over 20 years not one.

The nominations are quite disturbing when you consider it's Sports Journalists who make 'em.

It used to be one of my favourite nights of the year.
But since that grinning oaf Lineker started introducing it,with his nods and winks smiles to his fu(kin mates I've gone right off it.
When A.P.McCoy can't even get nominated to a competiton that Zara Basterd Phillips has won then that competition has no value or merit anymore.
Another thing they've ruined.

Massive shame Mark Cavendish will barely get a mention.

Unbelievable performance in not just the Tour De France but so many others as well.

surely it will count against him that the sort of person who votes on tv shows will be focussing on the x factor and it will be the more dedicated sports fan who votes on SPOTY.

McCoy and Phil Taylor not nominated, and a man who is not even close to being the focal point of his team and scarcely has a personality is a 7-2 poke. Stick your sack of shoite award up yer arse BBC.

i'm a united fan..... and Giggs one of the most overrated footballers of the last 20 years.
Cannot be even remotely compared to likes of Best, Charlton, Cantona, Rooney and Ronaldo etc
Wouldn't even get into United best XI of the last hundred years.
Gordon Hill and Steve Coppell far better wingers than Giggs ever was
By:
Slippy Blue
When: 12 Dec 09 23:51
Gordon Hill scored those two great goals in the F.A. cup semi final against Derby in 1976 and that is what he will remembered for, Giggs is on different planet to him.

It is not a sporting achievement award, it is a popularity contest for sportspeople.

The public will vote for who they like and what they perceive they have done to deserve it.

Giggs has had the media spotlight on him this last year or so for his longstanding achievements in the game and the public being tired of the rich footballers with arrogant attitudes etc help to frame what and how he has achieved it, coupled with his form during his twilight years as a reinforcer of his lifestyle and professional attidude.

I'm not saying he will win, but the camp that says he is not deserving seem to miss the point that it is not a sporting achievement contest.

For me, applauding the personality of a sportsman seems odd in the first place, but the nation wants to do it every year.

nothing to do with personality tjm. They should take the word out the title, but it started there and has stuck. The official blurb does not state that it is anything to do with "personality"

It seems a little unfair that Idowu is such a longer price than Ennis, when they effectively did the same thing - World Champioship gold in their event

Bob Nudd won 20 years running but they fixed the vote.

Now they have the top 10 nominations to prevent the mass angling vote!

Btw, it used to be one of the TV highlights of the year. Now discredited by the grinning dimwit Lineker who seems to think he is Lynam but in fact he is a characterless dullard with a whining East Midlands accent.

it's a shame that they kind of dumb it down. Still a highlight of the year for me, and this decade has been unparalleled in terms of British success.

I have tickets and am going. Got Giggs at 16/1 and i agree he should not win it. Neither should Button, never even heard him speak!!
Just found out who Cavendish is!
When Hoy won it i was gobsmacked, cycling is not even a sport to me.

Ancients of Mu Mu (RIP) tipped up Hoy before the Olypics last year at a ridiculous price. 150/1 with S.O. iirc.

A very pleasing thead! :)
