my sister is starting a business in the south of france where she will be doing the laundry (bed linen and big things, not clothes) for super yachts. she will also be providing them with groceries from the UK that you cant get in france eg marmite, chocolate, crisps etc

no decent iodeas yet. laundry and lager is the only thing ive come up with and thats rubbish. all help gratefully accepted

Laundry business sounds a better idea than the food import one which will presumably run into a lot of red tape (and do millionaire yacht owners eat enough crisps to make it worthwhile?).
Report boxingthefox • December 11, 2009 1:20 PM GMT
tiptopcat, you did not say if your Sis has premises or will "contract out" the laundry, either way collection and delivery plus quick turnaround in many cases are vital.
Report tiptopcat • December 11, 2009 1:25 PM GMT
she will start off doing the laundry from home and if the demand rises she will do from premises.

she already has one boat lined up for laundry each month with no advertising. she knows lots of captains who will use her instead of local french businesses. only needs a few a month for good wedge.

to give some idea of mark up on ajar of marmite for example 1 jar sells for 8 euros from the main place supplying it in south of france. basically little luxuries for the crew not the guests who are all birt, safa , kiwi or oz....

tiptopcat, processing sheets at home is a very hard way to make money, Duvets even harder. Washing is ok but finishing( drying + ironing) is the difficult bit. providing that you have little or no competition then you (She) will be ok a hand finished item can command a high end value. A modern industrial laundry can finish 700 sheets per hour on one (calender) machine=thats 5.14 seconds per piece, no way can anyone compete with that cost wise.

thanks for that last bit of info. well she would be charging what the current laundries in south of france charge. i can only assume these laundries dont have these facilities or they are completely taking the mikey ref the prices charged. the advantage of servicing this industry is that no one really cares too much about cost as it isnt their money. its some multi millionaire / billionaire paying the bills....

intersting though as that could potentially be the way for her to go in the future.

I'm not sure the two halves of the business are really compatable? I mean, I can see how the employees of wealthy yacht-owners might well go for the easy option of an outside cleaner. Aren't their employers though, likely to have tastes more sophsticated than a demand for marmite, bovril and yorkshire pudding?
Report boxingthefox • December 11, 2009 2:00 PM GMT
If the business takes off then you could purchase small industrial machines, that will fit in small (a room ) premises. a lot of small hotels use them in their OPL's, (on premise laundry) to excellent effect. this link might be interesting to you...http://www.laundryandcleaningnews.com.

Good luck with it, incidently some individuals have developed excellent businesses by providing a first class shirt service. this can be started by finishing by hand and if the business grows then upgrade to a "Shirtmaster" finishing machine. Good luck

Spick and Span

or Spic and Span.

These days it means clean and tidy, but it's a term from shipyards of the past meaning that a ship is new and in good order.

Thinking of that, she could use Ship Shape.

Pret-a-Naviguer or Pret-a-Partir could also work.
Report tiptopcat • December 11, 2009 2:15 PM GMT
the laundry services would be for smaller boarts which dont have the facilities on board and the food provisions side of things would be for all the boats specificasll for crew.

a big ish boat would have loads of food on board so would buy for example 20 jars marmite at a time several times a season. multiply this across numerous boats and it mounts up.

excellent advise ref laundry. thanks very much, it is appreciated....

tiptopcat, I have been involved in the service industry, image is paramount, for example, when canvassing prospective clients or even just making a collection/delivery it really helps smartly dressed in company livery, this can be as basic as a polo shirt with logo and smartly pressed trousers/skirt. Navy is always a safe colour option.

Sorry if I am stating the bl00dy obvious but the clientele you have mentioned expect this as a minimum, and should be allowed for in start up costs vehicle livery being the most expensive.
