When I saw the rap thread earlier - I too thought 'there's only one that I like' - and this is it! But I had no idea what it was called or who it was!

You probably won't like my link either then, BC, but that one starts straight away (same song) but she's a better singer. Still don't like the rapping part - but she belts out a mighty fine tune.

Another tune in this crossover genre I like is (this really is Jay-Z's speciality)

I mean the posturing is more than a little ridiculous, but again, the contrast between the aggressive undertone of the rap and the beautiful hook is compelling.

Okay Mitchell. As I said, life is full of surprises. I really dislike most rap music, but as soon as I heard this on Jools that night I though it was great.

Well no, it's just, he's one of the biggest rap stars in the world. Seems reasonable to think of it as rap, that's all.
Do you have some secret rap that you'd like to let us in on? If it's a guy from Bermondsey we're like way up for it!

"If you'd lived in the 30's 40's 50's or 60's, and sampled music of the time, you'd realise how vile this stuff is"
Who's the loser here, someone who enjoys something or someone who hates it? If everything other than haute cuisine tastes bitter than that's what you've become.
I LOVE these tracks!

Gangsters Paradise is by far the best rap song ever (not much competition mind) and at least you can make out the lyrics.

I'm not on about r'n'b, I quite like it, but the thread is about the track Empire state of mind, and specifically the rapper Jay-Z's contribution. Old school rap has I'm sure, many great tracks.

Gangster's paradise is just a slightly altered Stevie Wonder song though.
Grandmaster flash 'The Message' was totally original and broke new ground in pace and content. Plus all the white kids in glasgow knew all the lyrics. Incredible. nothing in its class since.

I can't for the life of me remember his name now - it was just one bloke. Very catchy song of about 4 (?) years ago. He appeared as several jockeys (I seem to remember) but they were all him.

I think what this thread really bears out is you should always be open to any genre of music.
I must admit, I haven't clicked on the other rap links as I don't like the music overall and would never seek it out - but when I stumble across something (like on Jools that night) I'll listen to it - and I was very taken with that particular song.
Every era and genre has it's good and bad. The 30s 40 and 50s had just as much dross then as there is now. The 60s was an exceptional decade, as I'm sure most would agree - but it still had some terrible stuff too.

Indeed, you look at the charts from then and the 70s and for every great track by The Who or The Stones there's several No-one Quite Like Grandpas.
It's a tragedy that video means that today unattractive artists can't get contracts however talented they are, but a bigger blessing that the internet means that doesn't matter!

Correct, Sparky. I see a lot on here in my age group who really liked the 70s music as they were in their teens and that's usually the music you associate with 'good times' (probably) but I felt really **ed at the time, as I thought four fifths of it absloute garbage. If it hadn't have been for Radio Luxembourg and The Old Grey Whistle Test, I'd have very rarely heard any good music from that decade.

"Empire State of Mind" is an anthemic hip hop song that features sampling from "Love on a Two-Way Street" by The Moments with influences of electropop and orchestra pop.

Again, check out Jurassic 5. They were great. I don't like much rap but could listen to these guys all day... no bling, **es or hoes in sight. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AZmQIGLNxBs - Concrete Schoolyardhttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xaz2qkDZ
Well, I don't know the difference between rap, hip-hop, ar any of the 'new' terms for such music, but if somone talks a lot all the way through a song - it's rap, to me.
I found a great version of New York State Of Mind in the early hours, made by MLB tv, which has been edited to show the Yankees winning the recent World Series. Most of Jay-Z's stuff has been edited out and the commentators do the rapping, leaving just the great beat and Alicia singing. An excellent video for baseball fans.
