Taken from the Guardian, an actual letter sent by the Inland Revenue:

Dear Mr Addison,
I am writing to you to express our thanks for your more than prompt reply to our latest communication, and also to answer some of the points you raise. I will address them, as ever, in order. Firstly, I must take issue with your description of our last as a "begging letter". It might perhaps more properly be referred to as a "tax demand". This is how we, at the Inland Revenue have always, for reasons of accuracy; traditionally referred to such documents.

Secondly, your frustration at our adding to the "endless stream of crapulent whining and panhandling vomited daily through the letterbox on to the doormat" has been noted. However, whilst I have naturally not seen the other letters to which you refer I would cautiously suggest that their being from "pauper councils, Lombardy pirate banking houses and**ant gas-mongerers" might indicate that your decision to "file them next to the toilet in case of emergencies" is at best a little ill-advised. In common with my own organisation, it is unlikely that the senders of these letters do see you as a "lackwit bumpkin

and I believe most letters are on a template

and with PACESETTER, I doubt if anyone would be allowed to send an individually written letter

I believe it's a massive computer system, meaning it can look at all files in one computer with the new system as opposed to contacting other offices?

well it will always have teething problems

It is a comic piece, written in 2003 by stand-up comedian and actor Chris Addison for his Funny Money column in the Guardian.

Currently, you can enjoy his work in 'The Thick of It' on BBC2.

By:

When: 09 Dec 09 17:48
sorry nightwatchman

but morale is up a bit here, with NDU being turned into a regional post/ admin room(Scotland)

everyone's safe and nowt to worry about

but with pacesetter being brought in at the new year, that's a bit of a bugger

By:

When: 09 Dec 09 18:07
going to London for HMRC for a stint would be cool, and would depend on how much savings you have and what you expect in your career

I have thought of "doing" London for a year and go back up, but I dunno, I do believe it's an extra 5k on top of the wages, but that is no way making the difference between my standard of living here in Scotland and living in London

too expensive for me, for my kind of living
By:
The Night Watchman
When: 09 Dec 09 18:12
i know, the sis job is tavelling the world as well but only a slight pay rise

think im gonna stick it out for a while longer, one thing is certain tho, not goin back to private sector
By:
punterfleecer
When: 09 Dec 09 18:14
That bird at the top, Cathy Wilcher is moving back to the private sector, well of course it'll be at the top, so nothing to worry about for her really

I'm thinking of staying in HMRC for the rest of my life too
