Yeah, probably a couple of hours in the car. We stopped off there on our way to a place called Busselton - we were there at the time of the tsunami. There are some amazing caves very close to Margaret River which are well worth a visit.

I stayed in Cottesloe and had a pool with the apt at a very reasonable price. Short bus/train ride to Freeo. Sail and Anchor pub and the bar in the market are worth a visit. Maybe the cannabis store is still open down the strip too ?

Freemantle jail is worth a half day visit ...seriously ..its closed as a prison now but open for tour guided visits, with all the old tales ... Perth + Freemantle are both great places and Cottsloe beach is halfway beetween the 2 .. Train fare is cheap ..Perth to Freem ..or Cottesloe... lots of wine making places down the Swan River ... And on the Perth waterfront are the old bells from Oranges + Lemons fame .. They bought them to celebrate Perths 100 year anniversary in 2002 and built a glass bell tower right on the waterfront ... "Bought" as in they paid for the replacement bells in UK so they could take the old ones to Perth ... :-)

When the weight of the 12 bells of London's St Martin's in the Fields became too heavy for the aging structure of the church it was decided to replace them with a lighter peal. These bells, first cast in the 14th century, together with with 6 more cast especially to add to them, were presented to the City of Perth as a gift . What to do with them became the next question. After many years, and much debate, a bell tower was commissioned to be placed by the Swan River. The finished tower, with its copper sails reminiscent of the yachts that sail here ( and the passion for yachting of the Premier of the time) and needle-like spire of green glass, allows the bells to be rung from a single platform -something they could never do in their old home in London.
The tower is open to visitors daily, with demonstrations of the technique of ringing (single bell) given on Wednesday and Friday -11.30 -12.30. The admission of $6 includes entry to an historical collection of bells, precision timepieces and optical instruments.
