the one madasahatter said gave a link to this site; the book obviously hasn't been printed for a while but this will probably do.

thanks.
Report Dobbo • December 7, 2009 9:56 PM GMT
There is hardly a book that has ever been published that is not on abe.
Report Darren Lamb • December 7, 2009 9:59 PM GMT
it's on there, but want a new copy and have no idea which one would be best...

Sort your search into "highest price " and run down the list and read the descriptions. If its out of print you want VG/VG no inscriptions etc
Report Darren Lamb • December 7, 2009 10:02 PM GMT
cheers

Thanks for the Abe link. Been looking everywhere for a certain book. Finally.

Looks a pretty decent 1st edition by the pics:

Does it's first edition status give it any added value?

No
I wouldn't say at all, as it's probably not collectable

But if a Christmas gift, gives you a sort of get-out-clause
Report rustyboy • December 7, 2009 10:45 PM GMT
go into waterstones. they can order anything you want and it usually arrives in 2-3 days.

you cant beat the personal touch. very knowledgeable staff too.
Report Dobbo • December 7, 2009 10:52 PM GMT
But they can only sell books in print.
Report luddite • December 7, 2009 10:54 PM GMT
Waterstone's system is currently down - two weeeks best for anything other than personality biographies and the like. As has been suggested, Abe books is the best for anything non-mainstream, but Amazon the cheapest generally for new, recently published books. I ordered various last Monday - delivered Friday last.
Report rustyboy • December 7, 2009 10:56 PM GMT

waterstones have other suppliers where they can get books that aren't in their warehouses.

Well, not according to the honest, clued-up young lady who works there, as she advised me last week. But you obviously know better than her.
Report rustyboy • December 7, 2009 11:02 PM GMT
well as a matter of fact i do because i work at waterstones and our systems are alive and kicking.
Report luddite • December 7, 2009 11:05 PM GMT
I hope Amazon offer you a job in the New Year when Waterstone's go down
Report rustyboy • December 7, 2009 11:08 PM GMT
;)

we're jam packed. There will always need to be a good high street bookshop because there are plenty of people who haven't got the internet/don't want to use it for shopping. also people want to look at books before they buy them often.
Report Dobbo • December 7, 2009 11:11 PM GMT
Personally I think you are wrong. The internet will kill Waterstones which is a sort of justice as Waterstones killed independent booksellers. How are you surviving at the moment? Top ten discounted titles.
Report rustyboy • December 7, 2009 11:12 PM GMT
god bless stieg larsson and jamie oliver. ;)
Report luddite • December 7, 2009 11:16 PM GMT
I love visiting Waterstone's, not least for the vast range and the odd-ball assistants working there. It would be a shame if the place couldn't continue, and I always feel guilty about buying elsewhere. My local independent is outstanding in terms of range, and I buy occasionally as my contribution to helping him to keep on going, but alas all too often the Amazon discount is just so persuasive.
Report rustyboy • December 7, 2009 11:17 PM GMT
i agree in a way.

i buy most of my books from oxfam.
Report Dobbo • December 7, 2009 11:21 PM GMT
I am a bookseller and I just cant compete with Amazon marketplace. Some of them sell as new books for 1p and make a few bob on the postage. Impossible
Report twopoundpunter • December 8, 2009 2:21 AM GMT
greenmetropolis.co.uk is a brilliant wesite to buy books
