just seen my son off at sheffield station on his way to afghanistan knew this day was coming but you just put it to the back off your mind and hope it never will. it only seems a short while back since he was a baby, now that same baby is going to fight in a pointless conflict so many tears shed and i dont know how i am going to bear up these next 4 or 5 months please let him and all the others come home safe, please.

pox I hope your laddie comes home safe and sound, however as a ex-soldier I know that he has been trained well and will relish the challange he is about to face.

soldiers as a rule do not get involved with the politics of going to war and hopefully his 6 months will come and go quickly and he will be buying you a pint ot two in your local after a successful tour, good luck.

True but if you're going to kill another human being it's best to know why.

Hope he returns safely.
Report bobby2424 • December 4, 2009 2:22 PM GMT
surely one of the aims is too kill others before someone kills him?

Otherwise become a travel rep if you wanna 'meet friends and see the world'

Wether we agree or disagree on the rights or wrongs of this war, I'm sure we all wish for the safe return of all the young men and women involved.
Report pox doctors clerk • December 4, 2009 2:58 PM GMT
the racoons, on the contrary he knew all the pitfalls and the situations we were in when joining and this is what he wanted to do, and hopefully as a proper father i didnt want to stand in his way i backed him in every move he has made since, but try telling that to his distraught mum and myself his brother and sister at this moment, its scant consolation i can tell you

All the best - can imagine you will be climbing the walls, I know I would be in the years to come if my lad were to sign up. My brother was a submariner and was away for 4 or 5 months during The Gulf War, and that seemed a bit too real at the time. Get your closest mates to take you to the pub - it's a must!
Report pox doctors clerk • December 4, 2009 3:41 PM GMT

Report Barry Conway • December 4, 2009 3:49 PM GMT
All the best though. I know a few soldiers, this must be hard for you, but as said before, he is a trained proffessional, and you gan guarantee his mates will be there for him.

My youngest daughter wanted to join the Air Force when she was 14 and still at school. She said that it was a good wage packet and a chance to see the world, which it undoubtedly was, but I told her that if this country ever went to war, you can't say 'Not me, I'm going home' while your mates get sent.

That was 1988, and even though she'd probably be non-combatant in Afghanistan, I'm relieved that she changed her mind.

I sincerely hope your son gets home safely, and if he has a god, I hope he's wth hiim.
Report Hearts.no1 • December 4, 2009 4:24 PM GMT
my son who is 14 has joined the ATC with the intension of joining the RAF (my biggest concern is the cholestral levels after eating bacon and eggs daily) ;\
