Noah Emmerich may not be a household name, but IMO, I can't think of an actor who is better than him. I first noticed him in 'Little Children' and was completely blown away by his 'performance' (though to call it a performance is a gross injustice to how believable he made the character).
Honourable mentions for Spencer Tracy, Humprey Bogart, Chris Cooper early Anthony Hopkins. |

Tevez beat me to it but James Spader for me. His performances as Alan Shore in Boston Legal are absolutely brilliant.
Also, and nobody's mentioned him yet, Donald Sutherland is quality. |

Klaus Kinski did intense lunatics better than anyone, probably because he was one.
Werner Herzog tells the story of Kinski locking himself in a bathroom for more than 24 hours. By the time he came out everything in there could fit through a tennis racket, including the toilet. |
