Such a great, great ending to a movie. Classic good vs. evil....notice Jack Palance dressed mostly black. Shane (Alan Ladd) walks into the den where all the bad guys hang out to take care of business once and for all to rid the town of these controlling monsters. This is the kind of scene that if you're changing the channel, and this scene has started.....you'll be compelled to watch the gunfight even though you've seen the movie 50 times! Alan Ladd was the **ing man in this movie!

I always considered westerns to be a genre for overgrown schoolboys, even though I know some serious directors have been involved with them over the years, but Shane really is something different. A realistic portrayal of life in 19th century Wyoming and the struggle to protect one's way of life. The final showdown is one of the best scenes in Hollywood history. What makes it so different to other westerns is that there is hardly any gunfire until the electrfying ending and Wow! What an ending.

They haven't the talent to make movies like this anymore. It puts today's childish rubbish aimed at souless 'celebrity' obsessed adults to shame. I could watch this endlessly..great hero, great villain & it teaches simple old-fashioned morals and honor which today's **e doesn't. One of the greats of the many great Westerns of the past, pure movie escapism. You won't see anything like it again. Not even close.

Classic film, even today nothin comes close. Great performance by all, sad Alan ladd turned into an alcoholic and the boy was killed in a motorcycle crash, but this film will live forever.

One of the all-time greatest films ever made. The best one Alan Ladd was ever in, that's for sure! He rarely got a chance to shine in a role onscreen as he did in this one! And Jack Palance has one of the all-time greatest villain roles in cinema history. Magnificent from start to finish.

One of the themes of the film was changing times and Shane doesn't fit in with the changing times. Shane tells Ryker his time is over. "My Time? Ryker says,"What about your Time?" ""Difference is I know it," Shane says. The old west ways when he could have gotten away with it are gone and that is why Shane leaves

Ok,we get the point, very good film admittedly, although 5 feet 5 Alan Ladd beating up a dozen 6 footers in the bar room brawl late on in the film was a tad far fetched.

This film gets to me every time. The gunfight - seen through the eyes of a boy - is unforgettable. And the closing scene where Shane rides off into the distance and the boy calls after him chokes me up. That Shane has to go because of his love for a woman and the boy makes it an even more devastating ending. She has a husband, he has a father - no place for Shane. But it is the feeling between Shane and the boy that takes this western to a level not achieved by any other in this genre.

Just imagine a remake of this classic today - slow-mo bullet entry and exit wounds, loads of CGI, topped off with a sex scene between Mirriam and Shane! They sure don't make them like this anymore!

There have been some superb westerns, SHANE is still the BEST of all without doubt. Ladd & Palance were fantastic, the direction likewise. The dog getting up & leaving when Wilson stands up is a stroke of genius. Note the dog initially remains in situ when Shane(good guy in white hat!) walks past. However, the dog senses Wilson's malignant character and escapes asap. Brilliant. Wilson couldn't take Shane, nor will any other film! Fantastic.

All the good westerns are set in changing times, about the conflict between lawlessness and freedom, constraints and rules. The Magnificent Seven, gunmen drifting, The Wild Bunch, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, "your times is over butch". It's all about a passing from one mythical age to another.

A magnificent performance by the great Alan Ladd and an achingly elegiac film. Everything about it is perfect, from the wonderful score to the arch-villain, Walter Jack Palance. There's a terrible, yearning sadness in the soul of Alan Ladd (I have no idea why - he was beautiful to look at and a wonderful actor) and in this film it reaches out of the screen and grabs your heart. Alan Ladd - come back. We all love you!
