Yes Huggy. decades ago, but I gather it's changed a lot since.

Actually it's amazing the amount of employment that call centres and the internet and such have brought to these remote places.

dunnet head is the most depressing place ever. full of lonely men sitting in their cars looking out to sea eating cheese sandwiches. How dull.
Report Monkfish • November 29, 2009 9:40 PM GMT
dunnet head - would be the most beautiful place in the world if it had the weather. give it 30 years

rustyboy - Bill Bryson travelled round Britain in 1994 and I think he wrote about a Chinese he had in Thurso.

"It tasted like Chinese food would taste if it was cooked by a Scotsman. Not that that was necessarily a bad thing, for after so many months on the road I just longed to taste something different."

:)
Report Monkfish • November 29, 2009 9:41 PM GMT
so he had a chinese in scotland and it tasted like a chinese made by a scotsman?

AMAZING SCENES.
Report rustyboy • November 29, 2009 9:42 PM GMT
when i say "full" that means about 3 cars, which is hardly full by football stadia standards i know.
Report TheRankingMissP • November 29, 2009 9:43 PM GMT
For example, did you know that the internet's most important reference tool was developed entirely by Wick homeworkers typing away in their crofts?
Report lobby ludd • November 29, 2009 9:44 PM GMT
It was cooked by a Chinaman but tasted like it was cooked by a Scotsman.......gerr it ?
Report Monkfish • November 29, 2009 9:45 PM GMT
not really. doesn't work as a joke on any level does it?

We were the only people on Dunnet Head,(we did not take any sandwiches)
Report Huggy • November 29, 2009 9:47 PM GMT
Just to tell you,we went up to Wick to see them play Brechin City in the Scottish Cup.
Report rustyboy • November 29, 2009 9:51 PM GMT
there is just nothing up there. Even the cows and deer cant be bothered going up there.

creepy place.

whats worse are the shetland and orkneys. Even less there.

Very strange.

Why don't they just live in london like normal people?
Report Coachbuster • November 29, 2009 9:53 PM GMT
Talking of Bill Bryson , he hired a car in Wick where the guy said to him ' you're from down south arent you ? ' :|
Report Huggy • November 29, 2009 9:55 PM GMT
Wick has a wetherspoons (The Alexander Bain) very lively it was to.
It also has a few less disirible drinking holes aswell.
Report alun2005 • November 29, 2009 9:55 PM GMT
Played golf late one summer's night there many years ago.

always makes me laugh english people coming up to scotland for the 1st time.

"Just went to the corner shop and asian guy had a stronger scottish accent than you!!"

what accent did you expect him to have? french?
Report punterfleecer • November 29, 2009 10:09 PM GMT
indeed

these English don't have a clue
Report rustyboy • November 29, 2009 10:15 PM GMT
It wasn't that they were chinese, but that they had somehow made it to the most northern, remote place in the Uk. Did they travel all the way from heathrow to thurso and not find anywhere better they could set up shop (literally)

made me chuckle. thas all.
Report a bitofinterest • November 29, 2009 10:16 PM GMT
not an eastender in sight :(
Report punterfleecer • November 29, 2009 10:21 PM GMT
thurso is certainly better positioned than shanghai when it comes to communism!

where you rather be rustyboy?

Left a note on the thread when you said you were going Huggy.

I worked with a carpenter from Wick on Canary Wharf in 1989

His son committed suicide on xmas day.
