I think Mrs D would like one of these gizmos for Xmas. Any tips/reviews/opinions on the best model under £300

Samsung NC10 or N130.

I have an NC10. £239 from Dixons is a good deal now.

N130 is excellent value here:

Are you happy wuth the NC10? Any criticisms?

Onboard sound is awful, doesn't bother me.

Touchpad is too small, I use a usb wireless mouse where I can.

Other than that it's great.

NC10 here. Very good if a little slow by todays Core 2 Duo laptop standards. Get the 6 cell battery one. Comes with 1 gig ram, need to buy a 2 gig stick really (only one slot - 2gb max) - nearly 40 quid at the moment!!!!!

Sorry if I'm pointing out the obvious Dobbo, but the Samsung model mentioned doesn't have a disc drive; you need to purchase an external one if you wish to install any software.
Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:38 PM GMT
Just put it on a usb stick.
Report Dobbo • November 30, 2009 9:38 PM GMT
Not obvious to me. Thanks
Report Ibrahima Sonko • November 30, 2009 9:39 PM GMT
Or transfer it all using a memory stick, which isnt difficult plus most software is downloaded.

Disc drives will be obsolete in a few years.
Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:40 PM GMT
There's rarely any need to install software from a disc anyway.

It's all out there for downloading.

She mainly uses a laptop for poker. Will this do the job?
Report Pokermonster • November 30, 2009 9:40 PM GMT
Definitely, yes.
Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:41 PM GMT
Plenty of people on here use them for poker.
Report Dobbo • November 30, 2009 9:41 PM GMT
That will do then. Thanks guys.Over to Amazon

It would be nice to know if they plan to bring out an NC10 with windows 7 on as then it would go faster, wouldnt it ?
Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:42 PM GMT
I've got windows 7 dual booting on mine.

It is faster, yes.

We have 2 Acer Aspire Ones. It does everything I need, 1GB RAM is more than enough for windows XP. If you can, buy one with Linux and install XP yourself, you will save £50. Mine cost £144 and my sons cost £220.

They come in Blue, Black or White. I reckon your wife would like the white one; it's the most popular colour amongst women.
Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:44 PM GMT
Mine is blue.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • November 30, 2009 9:45 PM GMT
and pink :p

Poker runs easily on my netbook although its hard to multi table.
Report Pokermonster • November 30, 2009 9:45 PM GMT
EGG: when you said "it's all out here for the downloading" were you referring to legal software or pirate?
Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:46 PM GMT
All the legal stuff is there isn't it?

Manufacturers websites and that.
Report Dutchy Schwarz • November 30, 2009 9:46 PM GMT
nudge nudge it's out there alright
Report Ibrahima Sonko • November 30, 2009 9:47 PM GMT

Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:50 PM GMT
I loaded windows 7 on mine via a usb stick.
Report Pokermonster • November 30, 2009 9:51 PM GMT
Try firefox alongside IE and see which you prefer. I run both with no apparent problems.
Report Ibrahima Sonko • November 30, 2009 9:51 PM GMT
Firefox is my preferred browser.

I installed my games with a memory stick.
Report Ovalman. • November 30, 2009 9:52 PM GMT
Linux isn't suitable for poker, I could only get stars to work on the OS
Report thebigdollopsright • November 30, 2009 9:52 PM GMT
thanks will try
Report Dutchy Schwarz • November 30, 2009 9:52 PM GMT

Report everythings gone green • November 30, 2009 9:52 PM GMT
