I think JJ is referring to the muezzin calling the faithful to prayerfrom the minaret. But if you don't know what a minaret is, you won't know what a muezzin is.

Here's a Youtube vid with a minaret and a muezzin in it. You can't see the muezzin, but you can hear him. I wouldn't want to live next door to that racket.

I found it rather beautifully hypnotic when i was in tunisia and morocco on holidays.

France banning buggers, swiss banning minarets - progress at last - will be last comme d'habitude?

I live within earshot of Birmingham central mosque and if there's an early call to prayer, I've never heard it.

There is one at about midday and one in the evening, neither of which bother me.

Just more stirring from people who know no better imo.
