Crow is a complete moron but putting him on the same programme as the unfunniest man on tv Paul Merton puts him in an angelic light.

That's like saying Wes Brown is good cos Phil Neville isn't. Completely irrelevant. They are all shocking.

I'm not fan of mouthy**neys and I like the programme, but Hislop, although slightly amusing sometimes, really is just a bit of a snide, not funny bully on that programme.

He knows that the audience is full of a certain type of chattering class dimwit who is all loved up with him and the programme and will therefore provide him with cheap laughs at virtually anything.

So, every so often they get some clown on, Crow in this case, who is likely to make a fool of himself and is guaranteed to clash with him. Hislop arms himself with a couple of well researched factual attacks and spends the rest of the programme rising no further than snide schoolyard bully jokes that are a) not funny and b) subject to toadying sycophancy from the audience.

I don't mind him when he has a serious point to make and on occasion he says the odd thing that is funny, but he reminds of a snivelling little creep who hides behind the school bully when they decide they are going to have a 'villan' on the show.

He isn't funny but the audience are the baying mob, gathering around the fight, eager to suck off the popular kid (Hislop in this case)

Seeing as United are mentioned above, I'll use the comparison I was going to use but decided not to.

Hislop reminds me of a more educated version of Gary Neville on that show. A snide, snivelling, not funny g1t hiding behind the cloak of his employers and constantly trying to score cheap points with his comments.

Hislop needs to stick to journalism imo. He's good at that.

largely agree, although I prefer Hislop to Merson. Note that when Hislop agreed with Crow he admitted it.

Merton isn't that bad, he's very quick. His Channel 4 show years ago was terrible though in fairness

he's very quick with the rehearsed ad-libs.

Hislop does strike me as being extremely snide and supercilious. I remember a few years back on a literary review-type programme when Hislop and David Baddiel actually tried to stare each out.. Looked like they genuinely wanted to kill one another. One of the funniest things I've seen telly.

HIGNFY massively depends on the writing.

Mertons little weird red herrings he goes off on are excruciating. Hes rarely funny

Hislop cant go two minutes without attempting to tear down the establishment with pithy one-liners and sarcastic, mock sympathy. Not not exactly guy fawkes

If the show has Marcus Brigstock or Stephen Fry on its extremely watchable as it grings out the best of the show

Crow seemed to miss the point of the programme. The idea is to extract the urine out of people who ARENT there, Brown, Blair and Cameron were all easy targets, instead he aimed some very poor shots at Hislop who swatted them aside with ease.

i think we are being a bit unfair on merton i think he is funny and i also think a lot is genuinely ad libbed.

considering the cr@p on tv, this is highly watchable.

I'm a libertarian, but I've got plenty of time for Bob Crow. He seems like a genuine guy sticking up for the union members he represents, and a welcome antidote to the other media-trained smoothies who now seem to dominate public life. I like George Galloway for the same reason.

I thought Crow gave a pretty good account of himself on HIGNFY, considering he's not a professional comedian and the others either are or have 10+ years' experience on the show.

Hislop is often right but seldom funny and so sanctimonious that he is very hard to like. Merton is stale.

One thing I've noticed is that some of the pro comedian guests don't actually say very much, but when they do pipe up it's generally quite funny. The amateurs like Crow tend to try too hard to be funny, say too much and miss the target.

I thought Crow reminded me of the Piers Morgan one years ago; the similarilty was that the 'regulars' went after him, but the difference was Crow largely ignored it and got away with it, whereas Morgan rose to it, thought he was the great god and got slated.
