need a mathematical formula, a correct one to which the answer is 17. its for a birthday cake for a lad who is a maths geek 9so it has to be accurate!) quadratic equation, calculus type thing but funny quirky will do as well

any equation can = 17 .

All you have to do is:

17= 3x^4-2x^2+4x -3

as long as you have 17 on one side of the equality and a set of x variables raised to different powers the coefficients can be anything and you can have as many X variables as you like.

I like maybe use greek symbols instead of x variables
