My father's got an old album of stamps from his childhood days, when he was a keen philatelist. From memory, the eastern European countries had brilliant stamps. Well. Hungary's were brilliant, and Ceskoslovenko's were good, but Romania's stamps were crap - presumably because Ceauşescu decided fancy stamps were something he didn't want to be a part of.
African countries had (still have presumably) colourful stamps. Guinea's were definitely up there back in my father's day. :)
