makes Gazza look like einstein imo

He had more courage than was good for him, he just wouldn't take a count. Lewis gave him a frightening beating, still remember when he got the decision against McCall as if it were yesterday. Had something in my eye that night.

Howdi:

been thick isn't the biggest crime in the world. like I say, bruno a good lad imo. and I agree with slippy, was a cracking night when he won the world title. Obviously not a legend like many that went before him, but still a pretty decent boxer. And one of lifes good guys imo.

"Get in there Frank"
Harry Carpenter's commentary when he chinned Tyson and had him wobbly, at the time Tyson was flooring everyone that was put before him. I have a great deal of respect for Frank Bruno.

I genuinely don't understand it, especially Trescothick. If he is under pressure/stress why do what seemed to be a video diary in India? He also seemed to have the earpiece in when taking that catch..more stress? Bruno/Gazza more understandable to me as it was when the career ended, like losing a job really
Report positively4thsteet November 25, 2009 10:46 PM GMT
I agree, I don't understand the trescothick thing either. BUT i'm willing to take his word for it.
Report Howdi November 25, 2009 10:46 PM GMT
personally think Tresco is a big wuss.
Report Perseus November 25, 2009 10:55 PM GMT
With Lennon the whole Celtic/N Ireland thing must have been stressfull and injuries like with Kelly Holmes must depress top athletes. The thing I don't get is that given the mental fortitude required to get to the top in anything (especially a profession as ruthless as sport) how does it suddenly seem to become an 'illness'? Lennon said 'if you have flu you take something, if you have a broken leg you take someting'........what exactly do you take for a broken leg?

Spot on Persues, why on earth is Trescothick wondering around with a webcam (or wahtever it was) in India when he had previously had all the problems.

I'm not saying he is a fake but he has used his condition for financial gain (book sales etc, etc).

Surely if he was 100% genuine he would give 100% of all his earnings (related to his condition not his cricket earnings) to a related charity.

Bruno never was a full shilling.

Come to think ofit neither was Lennon.

I thought Kirwin came out of it the best.
Report positively4thsteet November 26, 2009 12:24 AM GMT
horse sh.it mr G. of course you don't give all your money away. no one does that ffs.
Report RockMonkey November 26, 2009 12:33 AM GMT
I've marvelled before on here at how well Trescothick coped with the pressure of plugging his book at every opportunity.
Report MR G November 26, 2009 12:37 AM GMT
4th street, he can keep every penny of his earnings from cricket.

I don't think that he should be seen to be profiting from his condition.

I have no doubt that he is profiting from his condition.

He may not be a fake and he may wish to give up every penny to get back to normal but the fact remains that he has used his condition to increase his wealth.

In fact the geezer above who claims he is a wuss isn't far away.
Report positively4thsteet November 26, 2009 12:43 AM GMT
my only regret is that he wasn't diagnosed sooner
Report History Maker November 26, 2009 8:21 AM GMT
Surely if he was 100% genuine he would give 100% of all his earnings (related to his condition not his cricket earnings) to a related charity.

i) How do you know he doesn't? I know someone who gives 50% of his income to a charity he feels very strongly about. There are only 3 or 4 friends who know that he does it. He doesn't wan't everyone else thinking he's a holier-than-thou do-gooder.

ii) He still had to write the bloody book (or at least collaborate with a ghost writer). That's worth some return in itself.

iii) Would you give away all the money you earned from writing about an illness or affliction you suffered? Really? I know I wouldn't. I might pledge 10% of my royalties to the cause, but certainly not the lot.
Report Perseus November 26, 2009 10:18 AM GMT
As I said earlier, I am just perplexed how these sports people reach the top with all the pressure etc then succumb to this affliction. I simply don't understand and am a little bit sceptical about what they class as 'depression' if I am honest. Trescothick actually said he was worried about scoring the runs to justify his place in the side. Surely that is just normal everyday anxiety?
Report jimmy69 November 26, 2009 10:21 AM GMT
As far as I can see saying you have got "depression" is just an easy way out of dealing with the pressures of modern life.

Robert Enke biggest example yet of what depression can do to you. Horrible illness.

Still dont understand the Trescothick one though. But then a lot of people used to annoy me by laughing at my brother who has OCD and thought it was a load of rubbish. Just strange illnesses that no one apart from specialist and the afflicted can understand.

Depression is a physical disorder of the brain which can be brought on by psychological stress, drug taking and even allergies. Same for other mental illnesses. If I take vanadium supplements or bone meal tablets I go into a very profound depression, which lifts within a day of stopping them. Eating eggs also puts me into a depression. Amphetamine, cocaine ketamine and PCP will cause mentall illness in genetically predisposed people, case in point being Paul Gascoigne. Cannabis also makes some people psychotic.

Some people seem to be incapable of grasping the fact that the brain is an extremely complicated machine which can malfunction in people with genetic abnormalities.

It's not until you actually know somebody with depression , that you actually begin to understand the seriousness of the condition ......it is just the same as suffering from a serious disease and affects everyone associated with that person.........because it is a problem with the mind , the public seem to think of it as a bit of a joke . Most of the time it is due to chemical imbalance in the brain and is treatable with drugs like most illnesses . Failure to treat can have tragic consequences.....
Report wur November 26, 2009 11:10 AM GMT
Evidence points to inflammation (possibly autoimmunity) in neurons which produce serotonin for use in other brain areas. Area in question is called the Raphe nuclei.
