A grocer has a new set of balance scales but unfortunately could only afford one weight = 40lbs. He is very clever and takes the weight to his friend Ernie the Engineer who cuts the weight into 4 pieces for him as a favour. Now George the Grocer can weigh all his fruit and veg for any exact pound weight from 1lb to 40lb. What weights are the four pieces.

yeah you can. Put the 5 and the 3 with the stuff to be weighed and put the 17 on the weight side of the balance
