If you like seafood, Mussels are £1 in Iceland, you get far more in a packet than you do in a jar. Dressed crabs are £2.50 for 2 which is pretty inexpensive. Coke is also £1.56 for 3 litres, this is the cheapest I have seen anywhere.
Report Ovalman. November 22, 2009 5:33 PM GMT
Bread - 2 loaves for £1.60 and milk 85p are also a cheap staple that Iceland sell. Not sure if this is Norn Iron specific or nationwide.

I met a bloke yesterday who has been living on six pies a week for nearly two months. He bought six Scotch pies and six small tins of beans every Monday. Total cost £1.84. He ate one pie and a tin of beans each day from Monday to Saturday. I asked him what he did on Sundays. Have the day off, he said. I wish I was joking.

good mince , oats , onion, worcester sauce, tablespoon of olive oil, pepper, one egg

big frying pan

fry chopped onion in oil

big bowl

mash mince/oats/egg together by hand - add cooked onion and ww.s. and carry on mashing by hand - get really squelchy and thoroughly mixed

take a handful and shape as a 3/4" high burger - fry in pan

unused burgers = fridge for tomorrow or shape them and freeze them

lots and lots of tasty grub here for well under £5 for 5 meals +

just add another handful or 2 of oats to make it go further

do not skimp on the little but high quality oil needed

very good and very cheap and easy peasy and quick

whats the problem?
Report armchair jockey wilson!! November 22, 2009 9:27 PM GMT
yes..i agree it can be done.....and greggs are doing it.....so why would i want to fack around trying to save myself 4 or 5 pence for a shedload of hassle!......just walk in buy steak bake get it eaten...no washing up.....no electricity used....no farting around.....and no rubbish created!.....what could be easier?

Make a meat sauce e.g. bolognaise, with budget brand tomatoes and mushrooms / carrots / onions etc bought from the market on Sunday afternoon (when they seel 'em off cheap). Make a huge batch of it, and freeze them in portion size containers.

Then, serve them with pasta, remembering to go heavy on the pasta and relatively light on the sauce, so it goes further.

cheap food = nasty quality imo..how can iceland sell a 1kg bag of mince at 99p? becasue it's meat that not even a pig would scoff.

A mate of mine works for an industrial bakery, he told me years ago about the bread they made. Bread from the same batch was split onto two separate conveyor belts, one went into a known brand and was sold for £1 the other went into a tesco's value wrapping and was sold for 50p.

If you want to pay for your so called quality ingredients then go right ahead.
Report larry grayson November 23, 2009 11:11 AM GMT
Google "mechanically recovered meat" and you'll get an idea how places like Iceland can sell that rubbish so cheaply.

9/08/2001 in a report on BSE

He told the BBC Radio 4's Today programme that, in one investigation, they found that while a piece of flesh cost £3.30 per kg, MRM cost just 37p a kg.

And people eat that stuff just because it's cheap and even worse feed their kids on it.
Unbelievable.
