Years ago I read a few Arthur C.Clarke and similar books with stories about this. One that I remember was some student that just burst into flames just walking down the university steps. Reasons for it all were never known so the books said. Wha's the score with them then? Is it all a load of tosh? Has it been proved or disproved? And if it's real, why hasn't there been any recent cases in the news since I read these books about 25 years ago? (Unless I missed it :) )

Since every human body contains varying strengths of electrical field and the human body also contains flammable gases (mainly methane in the intestines), an electrical discharge could ignite these gases.

Methane (a flammable gas produced when plants decompose), that gradually builds up in the intestines and is ignited by enzymes (proteins in the body that act as catalysts to induce and speed up chemical reactions), is considered to be one of the most plausible explanations.
