I'm not a Newcastle fan but I was at St James the day that they secured promotion to top flight in April 1965. They beat Bolton that day with Jim Iley as captain. The 'mighty' Wyn Davies was playing for Bolton. |

Big crowd that day, 55,000, I was on the Gallowgate smack behind the goal. Wyn Davies hit the bar at that end with a header, but then he was never much cop on the deck.

Dad worked shifts - nicking a fag and a couple of matches from his pocket when he was in bed could be added to the list above.

Don't know if this was 50 years ago, but my fond Sunday memories consisted of Out of Town with Jack Hargreaves followed by The Big Match, and excellent Sunday Roast. Evening tea was sitting round the kitchen table eating sandwiches listening to the Top 20 countdown on the radio..

Can never remember being without a TV but do remember getting our first colour set around 1974. We rented it out of Radio Rentals.
I also remember keeping our milk in a bucket of water as we had no fridge. School holidays I was out at 9am and didn't come home unless it was tea time or 9pm. Lunch consisted of a bowl of custard with a dollop of jam. If you didn't like dinner your simply didn't eat. Your pet roamed the streets and sht where it wanted, no picking up poop back then. Only snobs kept their dogs on leashes. Stood outside my local football ground asking to be lifted in, we had crowds of 20,000 back then. Staying out to protect your Bonfire and raiding other bonfires if they didn't stay out (I'm from NI) Renting a boat out of the local park without a safety vest was a treat. As was swimming in an outdoor pool. Your life was dictated by how you done in the 11+, those who failed (me) had to get a trade, those who passed went to Uni and got an office job. The internet consisted of the Sun newspaper. Cooperman, we had weird opening times in NI, we used to go to the Bowling Club or a Catholic Club on a Sunday as they were the only places with alcohol at certain times (I was born a prod.) Despite the bombs, it didn't stop you going into the City Centre if you needed something. Getting searched by army and police happened occasionally (poor Catholics had it constant) 10p mix ups. Steiger lager was my first drink, 21p a tin which TBF has increased that much compared to inflation. Rich people had a telephone and a car. I'm 48 btw. |

In early years Sunday School, visiting my grandparents, Sunday dinner, weekly bath, bed.
When I had some say in it. Watching village football team on Sunday morning. Playing football on the playing field with mates. Watching Star Soccer with Hugh Johns. Forest Rangers or Skippy at teatime. Sunday dinner, weekly bath, bed. A bit later, playing for village football team aged about 15, down the pub after, Star Soccer with Hugh Johns, Official Chart Show on Radio 1 while in the weekly bath, bed. |

Out Of Town was great Alladin. Recuerdos De La Alhambra at one end and dear old Max at the other. They don't make shows like that anymore.
