[rant]Just went to cafe/coffee shop for a sandwich. One till. and some stupid cow in front of me wants to buy a sandwich and a drink and a pack of crisps with a debit card. Why can't people prepare themselves for the week ahead by having some cash on them. Should be minimum spend £10.
I hate it when people buy a few groceries, then get a lucky dip on the Lotto, then produce their card for payment.
You can sense everyone in the queue thinking "You absolute fecker for causing an unnecessary hold-up!"

I fume when the women stand there watch the girl run it through the till then they start searching in the bottom of their bags for their purse .. .." LOOK you knew you HAD to pay , why didn't you get your purse out instead of wasting 5 minutes of everyone's time !! "

Remember I was once waiting in a long queue in Ikea just to buy knives and forks. As the cashier readied himself for me, I was already there with the exact change in one hand, and with my two boxes in my other hand held facing him so he could quickly scan my items. I asked for him to keep my receipt. Transaction time: about 8 seconds. Like to think he was awe-struck by my no-doubt unprecedented efficiency.
NO MESSIN'.

I would pass on the 2.5% handling fee. Then again, I would probably have no customers!
Yeah, what is it with this handling fee cr@p ? Fvcking banks invented cheques for our convenience then decide to tax people on their use. Complete kuntz.

The Snake 17 Nov 02:44 Credit/Debit cards are just as quick to process as cash nowadays anyway, especially when you PIN it
No they aren't. Fiver in till and a few coins change = a few seconds.
Chip and Pin Cashier enters amount into till. Then into chip and pin handset. Enter card. Check amount on chip and pin handset. Enter pin whilst shielding hand. Press green button. processing... Please remove card.

for £3.78, it would have cost the shop 11p for you using your card
visa charge 3% of transaction............so if you were only buying a packet of cigarettes the shop would've made a lost selling it to you via a visa card hence the transaction charge

and I understand Asda and Tesco wouldn't charge you just for a pack of fags, but I wouldn't think it affects them much
of course if Asda starts doing it, it would dent their reputation

GET YOUR FACTS RIGHT.
Cheques were "invented" by traders to aviod them carying cash to settle accounts.
PS I guess none of you guys live in cities. Carrying cash in 2009 is dangerous you know. Hence, a debit/credit card for EASE of payment. I do NOT care who is behind me in a queue just WAIT your turn.

visa is the company that makes money from those transactions, do you think an invisible god transacts those transactions via the chip and pin machines for free?
local groceries cannot afford to give away transactions on those machines for free, some may, most won't
the grannies can take their money from cash machines

mine says maestro. no sign of visa. so why is it £10? or £5 that is the limit. i am a customer with a debit card not a credit card. well maybe there is a fee , i rarely use the card , still like cash , you know where u are with that. maybe ill ask for a 50p discount when i spend a tenner in there , ask him if im making him enough profit to enable me worthy a customer in my local shop.

stevie_p, the shop would rather have your cash, but you want to use your card instead
so the shop is charged 3% of the transaction so you could use your card................damn right you should be paying the extra 50p
shops that don't charge transactions above £10 are doing you a favour
