Will prob go with 1pt for each correct answer as usual. Hence I will try to make them quite difficult otherwise scoring will be difficult. Will try to get 40 qs together by then, perhaps even 50. Will all be done by 9pm though because I think sparky is doing his quiz tonight from 9pm onwards.

Sign in before the kick off for a bonus point to start off with.

Anyone willing to score is most welcome too.

cheers jimmy. yep v.good liam.

1 of the main problems was the scoring method, blatantly encourages copying and I'm sure lots of people were copying.
I stand by the Andy Gantaueme question, don't really know why some people (they were the cricket specialists too) took exception to it. Obviously wouldn't be Bradman, was far too easy.
The golf question about the non english speaking thing was badly worded admittedly
I fekked up the one about countries representing europe in ryder cup. thought i'd put spain in the question but hadn't, looking back i prob should'v just voided the question.
I timed up far too quickly on the colin mcrae question too, but once i'd done it i couldn't really go back on it.
Report liamcol November 15, 2009 9:55 PM GMT
pos, i posted this before the start,
scoring point for each correct :_| :_| :_|
i hate 1pt each correct, it not only encourages copying, it makes you feel guilty if you do get it right, anyway.

I didn't see much wrong in the quiz, a couple could have been worded a bit better, but they were still able to be understood, imo.
I enjoyed it anyway, well done.
Report jimmy69 November 15, 2009 9:56 PM GMT
The 1 point scoring system is flawed for that very reason Rob.
Report positively4thsteet November 15, 2009 9:59 PM GMT
i shalln't be using that 1pt method again jimmy, i can assure you.

I had always thought that was the fairest, but in my naievety didn't
realise that people would so blatantly copy. Trouble is when there
are big fields it is infuriiating when you know the answer type it quick
as you like and you're still 8th or 9th in and get nothing for your
troubles, can be very demoralising.
Report blackjackking November 15, 2009 9:59 PM GMT
Pos i think the biggest problem as such for quizzes are the scoring methods...

if its 5-4-3-2-1 or 3-2-1 it favours those that are good with FFF and quick connections.

But 1-1-1-1-1 leaves those that know or think they know not wanting to put an answer in early as to let everyone else know in case of copying.

I think everyone has a prefered method of scoring i think mine is 5-4-3-2-1 so more people can get on the board and those that genuinely know will get rewarded regardless.

Also depends on the level of difficulty, if they are hard Q`s then 5-4-3-2-1 works well as not that many gonna know even when a good quizzer gets it right and is in early. although when they are easy it lets the average quizzers in (like myself) to win alot of FFF purely because of speed and not ability.

Not sure whether ive given my opinion of what i think above. But i think it is a tricky area and think 1 for each is a problem.
Report blackjackking November 15, 2009 10:00 PM GMT
BTW i thought your questions were excellent and some very hard and some very gettable for most.

Great quiz, just the scoring but thats a problem for everyone not you mate
Report panglima November 15, 2009 10:01 PM GMT
One way round it is a point for any of the first six posts that have correct answer, by people waiting for the first couple of posts they will basically miss out on scoring if possible.
also no advantage for very fast posters but you do still have to be pretty quick.
only a suggestion
Report positively4thsteet November 15, 2009 10:03 PM GMT
That makes sense pumpy. If you wait till the first question is up, read it, remember it, click reply, type it in then click post, there will surely be 5 other answers in by then.
Report liamcol November 15, 2009 10:03 PM GMT
I'm working on a system for my next quiz.
It will be along the lines of,
1st unique incorrect ok
1st duplicate wrong -1
2nd duplicate wrong - 2
etc. etc.
There was one quite recently where a question had the same wrong answer repeated about 10 times, this would make it interesting.

I was just a bit p.ssed off that max left early. i think he got a real bee in his bonnet about a couple of the qs which surprised me - i've never found him to be like that before. I met him once and he's a decent lad, we've had a bit of banter on the cricket forum before too.
Report panglima November 15, 2009 10:06 PM GMT
just thinking of an idea to stop the copying Ro, plus the fact you want to keep the 1pt for a correct answer.
you could make it all correct answers in first 8 or even 10 replies
though probably 8 is top wack to stop most of the copying, that way most people will score points at regular intervals though of course not every time they get a correct answer.
Report positively4thsteet November 15, 2009 10:06 PM GMT
can be hardwork keeping up on the scoring with that system liam, but makes sense. goodluck

That was an excellent quiz - I had other things on this evening which is why I had to drop out

Nothing wrong with the Ganteaume question at all.

The non-English-speaking countries providing a major golf championship winner could have been worded better, I suppose, but I understood it (not that I knew the answer) and I couldn't provide an alternative wording for it.

As for scoring:

From a scorer's point of view, 1 point per correct answer is by far the easiest to operate. I'm sad enough to have a spreadsheet ready for scoring quizzes - the only problem I would have had is that loads of rare quizzers enter sports-only quizzes and it would take quite a while to put everyone's name in.

I've forgiven you for the Ponsford question!
Report STUDYFORM November 15, 2009 10:52 PM GMT
This looks like it was good. sorry I wasn't home to take part :(
Report Fenway November 15, 2009 10:55 PM GMT
I enjoyed the quiz, there were a lot of excellent questions, e.g Bill Ponsford, Zina Garrison.

My one small beef is that I am not too keen on the 'oddball' type questions, expecially when they are sports that not many people know about. Those of us who do know a bit about them lose out. For example, there was only one greyhound racing question, which was not about a dog, track or trainer, it was to do with an SP. I wasn't keen at all on the Ganteaume question, as his 'average' is not officially recognised, but that is just a personal preference.

To be honest anyone who takes the time to prepare a quiz should be congratulated. This was a fine quiz.

Report blackjackking November 16, 2009 11:08 AM GMT
But then again as has been said before with any scoring involving people taking a minus score for being wrong, when people dont KNOW the answer they simply wont have a go at it.

Why would you guess at 20Q you dont have a clue, for instance a country Q when you know it could be one of many and risk getting a minus when your a 10/1 poke to get it.

Minus scoring doesnt work, I did it a few times during my picture quizzes and it never showed as a good way IMO and a few others that took part.
Report Nirvana November 16, 2009 11:39 AM GMT
Agreed bjk. Guessing is part of quizzes and good fun, so to discourage it would be a pity.

No perfect scoring system online - all the ones we've used have drawbacks.

Next quiz I do I might try 4-3-2-1-1-1 or something. That way a decent number score and it won't be worth copying as you'll probably miss out on the points. I like to give a bonus for unique correct answers, so 5 pts there.

Scoring like that you need to ensure of course Qs are tough, so that those with faster typing/conections don't have a big advantage.
Report jimmy69 November 16, 2009 11:40 AM GMT
I agree BJK. I would never want to have minus scoring. It will stop people guessing...and at the end of the day it should all be about a bit of fun. It's the taking part that counts.
Report panglima November 16, 2009 11:43 AM GMT

I expect that sentiment goes for 80% plus of people that take part in these quizzes as at least that ammount will very rarely win a quiz but just enjoy the crac.

I think we can safely bin that system!
There were a couple of answers that would have skewed it somewhat, people getting up to minus 12, not through copying but misinterpreting the question.
In my own case, i know i never copy, yet to look at my final score, it is hard to believe, so back to the drawing board!
Report jimmy69 November 17, 2009 9:44 AM GMT
